hello my name terry moore and my dad,s is glen we have a ih model a and we would like to have a bit of help about on how to time the tractor . the magneto has been opened afew years ago and when it retuned it ran for a couple of years and then it started to run out of power when power was needed and it would back fire ,also couldtell me which the fire order is 1 3 4 2 is 1 on the front near the rad orat the back of tractor. thank you terry , glen

the timing wont jump sitting there put in some new spark plugs and fresh gas are you sure the engine is in correct registration might want to clean the mag cap inside but the timing hasnt jumped just sitting there chack plugs wires and cap first mags arent timed just fire there is no advance in the firing time it like the other guy said but if it starts iIT IS IN time

The number one cylinder is closest to rad. Number four closest to gas tank. Rotate magneto coupling until rotor botton points to number one posiiton on distributor cap. Crank engine until number one cylinder is on the compression stroke at TDC, then install the magneto with top toward engine as far as possible. Rotate the engine one full revolution just until number one cylinder as at TDC again (but magneto hasn't tripped), then losen magneto slightly and roate top away from engine until magneto trips.

BTW, if you solve your backfire problem, let me know. I'm working ona similar problem myself.
