ATF as hydraulic fluid?

Has anyone tried using ATF in a loader hydraulic system? Mine is used mostly in cold weather plowing snow. The substitute that TSC sells for Hy-Tran is rated at 10W-20. I'm sure that ATF is thinner than that and would flow better. It's used in power steering and that's a hydraulic system, right? How about it guys? What do you think would be the good, bad, and ugly of this idea?

ATF is used in a lot of skidloaders. I've heard of it used in other eguipment as well. Although I do use Hy-Tran in my 77 ford truck for tranny fluid. It works great. Use Hy-tran for power steering too.

Hy-Tran is a specialty Hydraulic-Transmission fluid that contains a number of anti-wear, anti-foam and anti-Rust additives. It also can absorb a fair amount of water that can enter your Hydralic system from condensation. Hy-Tran is probably the best fluid to use, folowed by the John Deer fluid.

International Harvester recomends the use of Hytran but one CubCadet manual also listed 30wt motor oil as a substitute.

Dextron (a common type of ATF) is probably just a little better then common Hydraulic fluid or motor oil. It dose contain anti-foam additives and a number of other additives including an O-ring conditioner. I've been told that switching back and forth with HY-Tran can cause premature leaking of o-ring seals.

On the other hand I've used Dextron for years as a Hydralic-transmission fluid with out problems.

Ok bring on the HY-Tran war.

Don't contaminate your system with the wrong oil. Stick with HyTran or something labeled as compatible.

ditto-- unless ATF is recomended I would not use it for hydraulic oil.
