I recently purchased a nifty Farmall tractor that has been converted into a fork lift. In fact is has been converted into 2 fork lifts because it has the lifting mechanism both on the front and the rear of the machine. The gent I purchased it from said it is a BN but it has a wide front end ( now wide rear end ) I can not locate any serial number plate or a serial number of any kind stamped into the frame or heavy castings. There are all kinds of numbers cast into the castings but none look like a serial number. I really don't know what to look for or even where to look. What clues should I look for in order to determine the model and year for parts ordering purposes and for general informaion ?? Any input would be appreciated. BB

I have seen one BN that was reversed and converted in to a forklift. If you found part numbers on a few big castings, like bell housing, engine block etc, post them maybe we can confirm a model frm them. How many speeds in the transmission? tire size?

Jim, I took a good look at the tractor today. It has a 4 speed forward and 1 reverse transmission. 24" tires on the front and 15" on the rear. On the distributor side of the engine is cast into the block is 251069R1 and also 1015R. stamped into the same side of the block is FCMG 26234 I hope this info will be of some meaning to somebody. Thanks for all the responses, BB

I believe 251069R1 is the part number for the engine block of a Super A or C. If 1015R is a date code, it is Oct 15, 1948. Farmall C engine numbers start with FCM, so you probably have an engine out of a C (which would bolt right into a BN). If the rest is a BN, there should be separate final drive housings out by the front (24") wheels. These should each be connected to the central transmission/differential housings by an axle housing. These axle housings should each be 18" long. If they are 22" it is a B rather than a BN.

These all came from the factory with a narrow front end. SO if yours has a wide "rear" axle, it also came from something else.

Jim, Today I measured the front ( 24" ) wheel axles and they are 18". SOOO ----- it looks like I have a BN after all. Thanks for your interest and thanks to the other folks for their responses also .. Regards, BB

Back in the middle and late 60's I was a young guy and driving an 18 wheeler. I loaded converted BN's and B's from a manufacturer in Michigan, delivering them on the east coast and south. Those weren't new tractors then but were apparently ones they had bought, repainted and converted and then sold. I sometimes had the opportunity to use them at the delivered location to move pallets around and they were super! It's been 30 years since I saw one of those converts, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are still going strong.

If it was a BN, the serial # was originaly inside the left side seat bracket. With the amount of modifications it would take for that kind of conversion, the tag may be long gone. There was also a serial # on the motor, stamped into the block, below # 1 plug, kind of behind the magneto. It would not necessarily be the same as the tractor #, but it would be close enough. Do you have any pictures of that thing? It seems to me that it would take an extraordinary amount of work to make a BN into a forklift. If it was a BN, I guess it would prove that with enough parts, a welder and a lot of time, you can make anything out of anything!

My guess as to the model would be that a modified BN is unlikely but not impossable. I would guess that it would more likely be a modified I-4 as these were used as the basis for lots of different modifications. Post a picture and somebody will figur it out. As to age, look for the engine serial number and after you figure out the model you can determine the age, and also look for casting codes .
