I need some help on a starter problem on my C. Sometimes, the starter does not engage the flywheel and just spins. Normally, after several tries or a blow from a hammer it works fine. What component in the starter would cause this.
Thanks, Bill

Pull the starter and check out the starter drive. I'd try cleaning it and lubricate with powdered graphite. Also check the starter brushes and electrical connection as the starter drive depends on rapid inertia to drive it into the ring gear.

I had the same problem on our H. I pulled the starter and oiled the bendix. That didn't help so I bought a rebuilt starter. You should be able to take it to a rebuild shop and have it rebuilt for less than $100. I think that was money well spent, because it sure starts easy now.

I would remove the starter and see if the bendix is free or sticking. Sounds like a little oil might do the trick. Drive gear should move in and out freely. If not clean and try a little light oil on it.

Bill, my bets would be on the bendex, either loose or worn. I would think it could also be that the flywheel ring gear is worn, but would pull the starter and check the bendex first. Could be itis just sticky
