Why does my super M not idle down?I can throttle it all the way back and it only goes down slightly. However it pulls a grade extremely good in 5th gear,so I know the governor is opening up.I also can pull the M and within 5ft it starts, but I can turn the engine with the starter and it will not start,do I need to replace the battery?I just bought it today and it is my first Farmall and I need some help.Thanks,Jack(TN).

You might want to check the idle adjustment where the governor connects to the carburator. Maybe its been turned in too far and you can just readjust it. Concerning your starting problems, I had a similar situation on my M once. The battery would turn the tractor over but it wouldn't start. On mine I was able to start it with the crank. I thought maybe the battery didn't have enough power to turn the engine and fire the plugs. It was an older battery. A new battery fixed my problem. If your tractor is cranking sluggishly it could be the battery.

Remember the throttle controlls the governor not the carburetor. The governor in turn controlls the carburetr. If you have speed controll problems check the linkage between the governor and the carburetor. It might be sticking or out of adjustment.
The magnito has an "impulse" device in it that allows your engine to start at low RPMs.If it's not working the engine might not start on the starter but would start ok at higher RPMs when being pulled.
My BN started and ran ok when I got it but I did a tune up anyway. New pluggs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, points and condenser. It starts and runs much better now. I may have spent some money that I realy didn't need to, but I have never regretted it! Good Luck. Dave BN
