Looking into mounting a direct drive Berkeley 3x4 water pump in front of my H, then power it off the belt pulley.would a flat belt or two v-belts be better? Also the rmp of the belt pulley is 1019 ?,if the engine is 1650 (isn't that a lot),and I want the speed of the pump to turn at 2200-2700 rpm.so what sizes of pulleys would I need at each end.I'm thinking I need double the size on the tractor end,12" to 6" on the pump.I have in the past run a Berkeley pto pump but thought this would also work to be used with 4' sprinkler pipe. Any input? Brad

Your figures are close. I couldn't remeber what speed the belt pulley on my H is rated at but I figured it was at 1080 (double the rear pto's speed). I came up with the pulley ratio of 12 to 5...(12in. diameter pulley on the pto and 5in. diameter pulley on the berkely pump). That should put you at 2500 rpm at the pump. You can use a simple formula to figure out your pulley speeds. D= (d x s)/S.

Where D = diameter of driving pulley, S = speed of driving pulley in rpm, and d= diameter of driven pulley, and s= speed of driven pulley.

I'm sure a flat belt would work, but be aware of the belt's rated speed for the job. I would reccommend using a double or triple combo of v-belts though. Use a belt tensioner too, otherwise the belts will slip and vibrate alot.

Another engineer's input:

Belt pulley no-load rpm for an H is 1121, so 1000 rpm under load is reasonable.

A 6-inch flat belt 5/16 thick should handle up to 28 hp at 3200 fpm (your belt speed), that is all your H would want. Of course the pulleys must be crowned and alignment for a short belt is very critical.

Premium quality, multiple A-section v-belts at 3200 fpm on a 6-inch small sheave should give good service at 3.9 hp per belt. Premium B-section belts in the same service should handle 6.5 hp each. Larger v-belts aren't suitable for 6-inch sheaves.

If an H will run the pump at the pto then it has enough hp at the belt pulley as well. For water, small pump hp can be estimated as

HP=(GPM*(PSI-15))/685
