i have a 53 cub, it runs fine with it choked about 1/4 choke. when i unchoke it, it starts to idle up and down? the other proublem is when i throtle up or down my linkage moves but the bar that goes in front of the motor back to the carb does not move. i can move it by hand but it is very stiff. any and all help is usefull thanks....

Sounds to me like it might be sucking air into the carburator where its not supposed to. You can check it with an unlit propane torch by bleeding out a little propane around the carb. if the RPMs increase by applying the propane at a spot, it's sucking in there. Check out around the throttle shaft, they will wear over time. BE CAREFUL! Do it outside. and don't smoke or have any spark or open flame around the propane.

If the shaft is worn, it will leak air and you can find it with the propane check. when it sucks propane in, the motor will speed up a little. If the carb is off the tractor, wiggle the shaft in the hole. It should turn freely, but, not be sloppy. Look at the hole, it should not be egg-shaped. Look at the shaft, it should not show a lot of wear at the spot that rubs on the hole. Some carb rebuild kits include new shafts.
