I have had such a wood splitter used with the PTO of a tractor for years very safely. I broke the tip of my screw and would like to find a replacement. If anyone knows of one let me know.
I do have a photo.

My father bought a screw type log splitter at the Minnesota State fair in the mid 70's. Designed specifically for farm tractors and runs off the PTO with a framework that attaches to the tow bar. It also has a guard that comes out around the screw (cone). Brand name was Bark Buster. We still use it on a Farmall B. We've never had an accident. Never used a better, faster splitter. I agree they're dangerous, just be carefull.
I believe they're no longer available but if you ever run across a used one, grab it. You'll like it.

My Mother in law had one of those they split a lot of wood with it. Personally I like a hyd splitter that I can move around the woodpile with. Also thought it looked very dangerous.

Larry: I'd be interested to hear more about the problems the screw type splitter causes to the truck or tractor. Can you tell us more?

Pete

I remember watching a demo of them at the county fair maybe 20-25 years ago.

I'd be very surprized if they are still made.

In my opinion, it looked like a REAL good way to get seriously hurt or killed...in a big hurry.

Think for a moment about the concept of having a huge, very agressive wood screw with plenty of horsepower behind it spinning near your person as you stick wood onto it... and then you stumble.

For my money, I wouldn't get near one...

But, Then again... It's your money and your body.
