I found a Super H i would like to set up for tractor pulling. I also found a 350 engine to put in it. Im planning on disassembling the engine completely and going through it. What are the ways to pep it up a bit? Im guessing some head work, maybe some cam work? I would appreciate any tips. Thanks

Jake

Jake, you would not have to do much to the 300-350 head. Maybe mill enough to clean the deck up. Find a cam if its worn out, you will need the timing cover off the H or Super H to eliminate the hyd pump. What size tires and what are your hitch specs you have in mind for the "class" of pulling you have in mind? At 175 ci, with 14.9X38 tires with pulling off the stock hitch loop works good up to 5000 in a low gear class. Maybe 2nd gear in a lite 3500 4mph class, depends on if its a short track or long distance track. Once you have the engine done, then you have to hop up the carb the governor and the distributor. Im sure if you search the archives here, you will find something on how to. Havt the Super H flywheel reconditioned, and keep the rockford 10.5 clutch from the Super H if you plan to keep the belly pump. Ive seen on the Super M, and the 450 clutch, the 450 clutch hits the belly pump,, and Im not sure if the H to 350 is the same way or not. Im about to know here when I assemble my clutch for my own H. I went with a Super H flywheel, and SH disk and 350 pressure plate on a 263 ci stroker "300" C-169 base this time around. Hope this helps. ChadS

Thanks for the help. Out here in Oregon, we dont have all the different class designations yet that are in the midwest. Usually just 0-3000lb, and up in 1000lb increments. The main restrictions are 5 mph and a 20" drawbar. I plan on 13.6.38s that I have that are worn well with nice sharp leading edges.

I have a 52 H that I have pulled with a few times. Its a stock engine with the low first gear. Its ok, but its almost to slow as it always spins out and there is no ground speed to get through soft spots.

With the 350 engine I planned on electronic ignition. Is there one that works in the IH dist? Or do i need to find a Delco? What kind of carb and govenor work needs to be done? I plan on taking out the belly pump so I can pull hopefully from 3500-5000lb classes.

Thanks for your time and info.

Jake

Yeah, keep the Super H rockford clutch then. If your SH is 6 volt, I think there is a 6 volt positve ground kit,, 12 volt negative if its been converted for IH distributors are the horizonal type, most delco were verticaly mounted, and has an angled tooth gear instead of the straight fine tooth the IH dizzy has. I think, even the cap is different on the Delco. Ive seen Super H's beep the 3 mph at 10% with 15.5s, 3.5 mph with 14.9s in low gear. If the sled is pretty light and easy to pull for the lite tractors,, then might run 2nd gear in 3500, but its gonna be asking for all its got, which, could be a good thing if it does and dont stall, or,, if its not enough and quits 6 inches to early,,,,, But low gear, if the sled is heavy and the tractors get a good hook up,,, with th 13.6's,, if they are tall,,, then you might have a pretty good shot if it hooks up and dont over power the tires by aggresive driving. Can ya run front suit case weights? ChadS

My Super has been converted to 12 volt with the IH distributor. Will a Pertronix kit work in those?

On a couple of the tracks we pull on out here are pretty soft and short. 2nd gear may work better for these.

We can run weights on the front. I believe the maximum distance is 18" in front of the front tire. I have a bracket on my H now that I run 40lb JD weights on that works well.

thanks again for the help.
