I am restoring this old R, I will be done soon and I want to pull it this summer in a few local pulls, I have never pulled a tractor before although I have operated tractors my whole life on the farm and ranch, For some reason I keep thinking im gonna flip it over backwards and make a jd sandwhich. I need some advise as to how to stay safe with this old beast and still have some fun, I dont care to win or anything, i just want to try it out, this is the only R I have seen in our country and I have never seen one at our local pulls. thanks guys!

Wheelie bars are required at most pulls..

You can get a "pulling ring" that bolts right in between the drawbar rails under the PTO...then you can remove the drawbar.. Getting it under 7,500 lbs may be hard...don't have any fluid in the tires..!!

Setting the injectors to "17" on the rod indicators does help and will make her really smoke when the front wheels are ready to lift..!

You should check the rear drawbar mount and re-inforce it, so it does not spring down when the sled gets heavy..

Have FUN..!!

Ron.

Thanks for the replies, the engine is all stock, just refreshed, like Ive heard you can bore em out and put in the bigger pistons but want to leave it stock. the drawbar has not been modified and I will measure to check on that 18 inches, thanks again! I can imagine this could get addicting, hopefully pulling aroud two 8000 lb tractors will curb my enthusiasm when I pull up to the diesel pump to fill up my dodge

unless the drawbar has ben shortened or raised above 18" or the sled has a crazy short chain I doubt if you will get much lift at all and it wont flip over. stock tractors with long draw bars dont usally need wheely bars because if the front end ever does go up the downward pull of draw bar will stop and front end will go back down.besides that an r is very nose heavy anyway and you will be in low gear. dont lug engine too far they run backwards very well and very messy.Paul

with those skinny tire you will be spinning out a lot. BUT you will have as moch fun allowed for $10 or what ever your pull charges. BE CAREFULL IT WORSE THAN DRUGS AS A ADDICTION.

On the hard clay tracks around here. Those tall narrow 34" tires will pull a 23.1X26 tired tractor around like a toy.

On the pistons.. Yes.. the oversize helps... but its the design of the pistons.. shooting fuel into a hole in the piston, instead of a bowl.. the later injectors will not match up to the R pistons.. Most after market, and modified injectors are for the other style pistons...

Does it still have the R pistons in it?? it could really use the 730-830 style pistons.. injectors.. and the 13mm pumps..
Add some wheelie bars to the back, if you are worried about it tipping.. You can weld a short piece of square tubing on the on the angle hitch frame coming off the axles.. and use it like a reciever hitch.. then have long sq tubing pinned into the short piece... pull the pin and you really wont be able to see the short piece welded on the angle frame..
Good Luck and have fun..
