Can anybody tell me what I can do as far as beefing up the unstyled B 149 engine. I would like to be able to pull it in a 3mph. class. I dont want to go as far as a custom stroker crank but maybe different pistons, cylinders, compression, etc. I am new to JD so I am trying to find out what options I have. Can I get 40 hp. out of it without stroking it? Thanks for any advise, JM.

The old set up used to be a wartime "B" crank and offset it for the early "B" rods. Then bore your block out for the 4 1/2 pistons. The block gets thin but it will work. JD B Puller is right-there has been some big "B" out there but still having trouble getting big HP. I had a "B" back in the early 80's 5.500 X 7.00 it had around 54 hp.to 58hp.

Good Luck.

JM, I think you are pretty ambitious to take a 12HP (?) tractor and more than triple the HP without changing the cubes. A lot of guys running Powerblocks and stock cranks would love to get to 40HP. A Powerblock is a 5" bore, compared to your 4.25" bore. I'd think you'd need a 7" crank, Heisler Head and 4-3/8" pistons to get your 40HP that you're looking for.

There's a lot of PB tractors with 7.5" cranks out there - guessing HP at around 60.
Unstyled B's are good to look at, but for pulling, not many have made good pullers using all unstyled parts and certainly not without building the motor up. Possible to put the later crankcase on there, which would at least let you run bigger blocks and give you a better trans.

We tell everybody our B has 100 HP, but really it only has 98. By the way I got some Arizona beach front for sale too.

Believe me or not, but it will pull 5500 in 4th gear and you have to stand on the brakes to keep it from breaking loose. Ive heard from many people that it is the stoutest B in the country.

Even if this tractor does have 85HP, it will not pull 4th gear @ 5500 on a good track with a normal length chain. I would call BS even if you are talking about pulling in pure sand with a 60+ inch chain attached to a rinky-dink sled, running little bitty uncut tires on a creeper gear tractor.

There are a lot of 85+ HP JD-A's out there and JD-G's with more power than the A's that can't run 4th gear @ 5500lbs.

That being said, I have pulled against a B @ 5500lbs a few times, and if someone were to tell me that this particular tractor had 85HP, I wouldnt call them a liar. It's a strong tractor, BUT it doesnt just blow the tires off in 4th gear.

Tip of the day: Running a big gear on little tires in sand doesn't make you or your tractor special. Write that down.

Well this tractor pulls a sled that will stop a 10,000 pound tractor. It has a 36" chain. I live in east Tennessee so there is no sand around. All red clay. And the tractor is running 15.5-38 Firestones with 1.5" tread, with 10 pounds of air. So if any more comments I would be glad to answer them for you.
