HELLO newhpuller.
The ratio in R.P.M.'s between the engine and the alternator is 1 5/8,One revolution of the engine , 1 and 5/8 revolutions of the alternator. With the engine speed at least 500 R.P.M.'s. This would make the alternator run around 750rpm's and should start charging.Put a volt meter at your battery terminals if you get 14V at 70 Degrees F. the alternator is charging.
Guido.

The one wire alternator is not the simple solution it appears to be.
Get the cheaper three wire alternator and wire it in properly. It will excite at low rpms and won't flatten the battery.

NAPA 1 wire has to turn approx 850 RPMs to start charging, if it drops below that it will drop out. Depending on what size pulley you have on it, you may have to rev it up pretty good to get it to start charging, but it should not run the battery down when not running. I have them on three different tractors and they work fine.

Did you rev the engine high enough to entergize the alternator?
