You should be able to get around 65 Hp out of it by turning up the fuel and advancing the timing a little. By advancing the timing you put the fuel into the cylinder a little sooner giving it a longer period to burn. This also helps out bottom end power too. A few more Rpm's won't hurt either. We have a Super 77 diesel running around 65-70Hp. You can break the rear tires loose in 5th gear while pulling a wagon. Another trick is to get rid the the preheater glow plug when pulling. THis restricts the air flow. It might also help to onhook the air cleaner only while pulling for added air flow. don't turn the pump up too far. Like the other guys said, too much doesn't help, it actually will loose you HP. A light black haze or a little more is enough fuel.

Is this a little black haze at an idle or open throttle?

An injection pump will only put in enough fuel to maintain a certain Rpm or give more fuel depending if the operator wants more or less fuel. So the answer to your question is that the black haze is when it is fully loaded. At night we got a nice orange glow coming out of the stack when working it really hard. This indicates that you not overfueling the engine with too much black smoke.

I'm not an Oliver expert by any means, but I have to agree with Dale. Too many guys running diesels believe that they can achieve tremendous power by simply turning a screw. That only works until you reach the air-flow boundaries of your engine. If you can't get more air in to go with the fuel, all you're doing is overfueling the engine and wasting fuel. That's all the black smoke is - unburned fuel. If you're going to mess with the pump, make sure the rest of the fuel/air system is in good shape also - nozzles, intake system, air filter, exhaust, etc. This applies to any tractor, not just Olivers.

Since the heads use energy cells instead of direct injection you can only gain 4 or 5 horse by turning the smoke screw.Good Luck!!!!! !!!!!
