I've recently purchased a 1953 John Deere Model R. It runs great, but needs some bodywork and a good paint job. After I get an oil leak fixed I plan to enter it in some stock tracotr pulls here in Virginia. I'm only 21 and I've been to many tractor pulls, but I've never pulled before. What advice can you veterand out there give me? From what I know and what I've been told the model R is usually at the top of it's weight class in the stock category.

I've been to a TON of pulls too and to be honest, I've NEVER seen an R hook to a sled. I'd say the reason for that is they're too heavy and under-powered for their weight. Deere changed EVERYTHING about their 2-cyl. diesels after the R... Added main bearings.... bigger starter engine... beefed up the PTO.... I'd paint it up pretty & take it to shows if it was mine.

I pulled mine for the 1st time yesterday. It weighed in at 8285lbs. It is bone stock with 2 weights on the INSIDE of each rear wheel. It was like this when I got it. I haven't wanted to disassemble it just to take them off. Although I was getting some wheel spin I was running out of power too. The muffler has been replaced by steel PIPE, not just tubing. It apparantley makes a differance in sound. It sounded real good but was different from the other diesels. The 70's and 720's have more power and are lighter so they can distribute added weight. They gave me good run.
