I have a stock 1956 Massey Harris 444 and would like to know what would be the best gear to pull in. This will be my first time pulling and I don't want to totally embarrass myself. Any information would be appreciated.

Hey Eldon
I think you ought to try second gear.
But watch out for them Farmall M s.
Are you pulling in good Oregon dirt? Good luck Joe

Thanks for the tip Joe. Since I haven't pulled before, Iv'e hired a professional driver "Ron" to run my tractor. He said he won't have any trouble with those Farmalls.....

I pull with my Super M. I was first puller in the 6000lb class. I pulled in second and ran out of traction before horsepower. I dropped into low for my second pull but I lost ground. I would say you are best to go in the highest gear you can that will allow you to still run out of traction first. You can play with your engine RPMs to help the traction part of it.

I have pulled a stock 444 for 3 years. This weekend I put on my 18.4 - 38s and pulled the 5500, 6500, 7500 and 8500. In 5500 I used 1st gear high range, in 6500 used 2nd gear low range won the class, 7500 used 1st gear low range placed 2nd, 8500 used 1st low range won the class. Yes their were Farmals in the classes. You have picked the best stock puller. GOOD luck and have fun.
