I have just rebuilt the engine on my 51 A . I havn't checked the compression yet but the starter sure is haveing a hard time turning it over. I have rebuilt it with new bushings and brushes. Is there a stronger starter that I can put on the tractor? Thanks for your help.

Maybe it isn't a starter problem or a compression issue - maybe the bearings are a little tight, or maybe everything in the new engine is dry. If you pull-start the tractor, run it for less than a minute so that you don't burn a bearing, then check it with the starter to see if it spins freely (petcocks open). If it is still too tight you might want to recheck the rod & main bearings.

I took out the spark plugs and it will turn over pretty fast. doesn't seem to be too tight. I had it over bored for a loose fit to the pistons. and it is the original rod bearings. I did not have to take the crank out. The bushings in the starter were shot and it was dragging bad before I replaced them and the brushes. I might have damaged the armature when it was dragging so bad. might need to replace it.
what do you think?
