I HAVE A JOHN DEERE 60 THAT I REBUILT ABOUT ONE YEAR AGO AND THE HEAD GASKET SEAPS A LITTLE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BLOCK. I AM GOING TO HAVE THE BLOCK AND HEAD MILLED TO TRUE IT UP SO IT WILL SEAL. IT HAS M&W PISTONS IN IT AND I WAS WONDERING HOW MUCH I SHOULD GO. JUST ENOUGH TO TRUE IT UP OR MORE. I STILL USE IT ON THE FARM BUT I PULL IT TO. THANKS FOR ANY HELP

Poppin 60, I have worked on a lot of late A and 60 tractors and your 60 will likely already have hardened studs installed in it, and they will work just fine. There is not a lot to gain by milling the head on a 60 because the chamber is pretty shallow and once you get so far there is nothing more to gain. A late A head is another story. Get the head trued, and when you install the gasket put a thin layer of #3 Permatex on the outside vertical rails of the gasket, making sure you avoid the inside rail where the fire ring is. Put this on both sides of the gasket. When you torque the head start at about 50 lbs. and increase it evenly in 10 lb. increments and go to 150 lbs. Start and run the tractor and check them again. My 60 pulling tractor is running over 9:1 compression on original factory studs and has never leaked a drop of anything. I have used this method on several of these tractors and it works. A hole in the thermostat isn't a bad idea, but make it as small as practical because if it is too big you will have pretty much eliminated any warming ability the thermostat can provide. Hope this helps. Mike

The Late "A" & 60 cannot spare any metal from the block or head. Mill them both square but don'tuse a mirror finish, a slightly coarse stone will leave some "tooth" to grip the gasket. All new studs, nuts & hardened washers from Deere or a supplier with the proper grade. The old fasteners are streched. A stud/bolt is a straight spring that holds the head on under elastic tension. Use a 180F or 195F themostat & 70/30 antifreeze to distilled water.Drill a 1/8 vent hole through the thermosate body to ensure vapour/steam bubbles are bled away. Thermal shock as a rad full of cold water hitting a hot engine can cause warpage. Operate a cold tractor in a slower gear @ a lighter load untill fully warmed up,as per the manual.

My 2 cents would be to go enough to true the face and reinstall. If you have troubles down the road, you will still have some material to clean up the face again.
