can anybody out there give some insight into a good camshaft and builder for an A with a stroker crank? I have heard so much and have seen dissapointing results, I personally know two or three good runners, I mean they will lug it down the track at like 900 to 1100 rpm and the engine hardly changes, Who does cams like this, cause these guys ain't talking about it much. thanks in advance. ps, why do some guys also say you can't beat a stock cam??

Mike you need to get in touch with Mr. Alan Schooler in Princeton,Mo.@1-660-748-4475 or email deere@grm.net. He may be out of town as we speak but try the above #'s and he should be able to get your tractor going, and he is a heck of a nice guy to deal with hope this helps. Gman

The styled A right through to the 630 had the same cam lift and duration.

I can't speak to the issue of who the best cam grinders are, and you'll probably have to do a lot of shopping to find one that suits you. I can comment on the stock cam question, though. A lot of guys are perpetually stuck in 1950, and refuse to believe that modern technology has any place on an old tractor. The stock cams were definitely a collection of compromises. They had to provide the best fuel economy possible while making good torque over a wide rpm range. All sorts of factors had to be considered before designing the grind. If you're into pulling, you can now have a camshaft ground to your individual requirements - bore, stroke etc. Cams can also be specifically ground for high rpm horsepower or good low-end torque. If you want the maximum performance out of your tractor, a re-ground cam is the way to do it. Lots of guys put mega-bucks in big pistons, head work, stroker cranks and whatever else and never even think about the cam. The proper cam will make a world of difference, because the cam is the "brain" of the engine. Nothing else will work to potential if the valves aren't opened at the right time, kept open for the right length of time, etc. My two cents.
