By reading all the posts it looks like there are no rules regarding what mods can be done to a pulling engine. Pulling looks like fun but I've asked this before and haven't got an answer. Where is the line drawn on what can be modified? Is it only a weight class rule system? Loren.

Our club and pulls have rules on mods and by weights. If your tractor meets the rules then you can pull that class. But what can be done and still fits the "rules" is very open.Unlike in the race car meets, tractor pulls don't pull heads, etc. to make sure everything is equal and not internal mod.In our club if someone is running out of their class consistenly,I would think that the members would address it.I for one do not enjoy "walking away" in a class. When i reach the top of my class consistenly then I'll move up.But then again that's me. Some people would rather just take home 1st place trophy's and brag about how good they are.(translated"Cheating").There is nothing wrong with improving a tractor to it's best. But if this sport is to grow, then we pullers have to allow new guy's a chance(classes) to be able to learn and grow as we have.Don't be just a watcher, take your tractor to a pull and have fun and learn.Best to you,Dan

You have to have a stock block, or a "manufacturer's replacement." The heads and all other parts apply to the same rule.
Hope this helps...Hope to see u pulling in the future!!

This applies to NATPA regular members only. Board members use their own rules.

IF THERE IS A BOARD MEMBER LIKE THAT, LET THE FRUSTRATED HOT RODDER PULL IN HIS OWN CLASS.
IF ANYONE PULLS AGAINST THAT WING-NUT THEY ARE JUST SUPPORTING HIS NEED TO SABOTAGE THE ORGANIZATION. LET HIM PLAY WITH HIMSELF, MAYBE MR.MONEY WILL GO ELSEWHERE. WHY ENCOURAGE HIM BY GIVING HIM THE SATISFACTION HE BEAT YOU WITH HIS RULES AND MONEY!!! I REALLY HOPE OTHER MEMBERS AND OFFICIALS DO NOT LET THIS INTIMIDATE THEM AND JUST ASK HIM TO USE THAT TRACTOR TO MOW LAWN WITH IT OR SHOW IT AS A NICE TRY TO DESTROY THE NATPA KEITH

Join the natpa and get ready to be steamrolled by all their rules and regulations. They are like dealing with the federal government.

Yes, I WAS a member of natpa(charter member). They took all the fun out of pulling.

There are many clubs out there that are nicer to you and treat you with respect.

Hayne, Tell me why you think 18.4 tires are the answer. What kind of tractor do you have and what weight class do you pull? Do you have all soft tracks to pull? 18.4 aren't worth a hoot in light classes in Illinois dirt.We can run 15.5- 38 or 16.9-30 any gear 10% on RPM. Doesn't NATPA pull all over the country? Hayne, Why dont you explain to us how the board members have different rules for the tractors they pull. If everyone would bring all this out in the open I think the problem could be solved. Tractors with cast blocks and tractors with engines that are not of that model should all pull in the open modified class period... I think overall the people we have here in Illinois do a pretty good job. Do we have any problems yes we do. But its nothing that can't be fixed. We have a good sport going lets work together to make it better.Earl in Illinois

I can only speak for my experience and some others in my area. Our biggest beef with the natpa was over tire size. We wanted to use 18.4 in all classes if you thought your tractor could handle them. Other regional clubs that we have pulled against are open to suggestions, they may not always agree, but you felt like they would give your suggestion some thought. The natpa was and still is a "my way or the highway" organization.

I have met some of the nicest people from around the country since I started pulling. I do this to have fun, if I win that is a bonus.

I agree in some respects on the tire size issue--my M-H 44 wieghing 4500# basicly has only one size of tire to run and that is the stock 13.6 x 38. But the AC WC that pull in 4500# has a whole %^&% load of over size tires to choose from ( DIv. 2)
