I just went thru my engine , it is a 53 model Super M with firecrater pistons already in it. My compression with the gas head ran 160-165psi. I put in a new Bullett cam and 450 LP head and My compression runs:

#1 250 psi
#2 275 psi
#3 245 psi
#4 250 psi

# 1 is the closest to the gas tank going toward the radiator.

Question:
1. Why is # 2 higher than the others?
2. What does this compute to compression?(from all cylinders averaged)
3. Is it normal to raise your compression 85-115 psi by just adding the head and cam?

Give some answers and advise.

The LP head is about 140cc per cyl. The gas head is about 220cc per cyl. What you should be concentrating on is your compression ratio, not necessarily the pounds of compression.

Can't give you expert advice, but: Correct firing order is 1-3-4-2 with 1 being closest to radiator. The LP head will have a chamber ceiling which is about .250 lower than an 8060 casting head, but I don't know the cc differents. PSI will vary from cylinder to cylinder and head to head due to efficency of valve to seat seal. Higher lift cams (with stock duration) may increase dynamic compression ratio due to increased volumetric efficency. Keep us posted, I'm curious to know if lugging power has been reduced to increase high rpm hp. Good Luck.

Number two may not be manufactured exactly like the others and valve lash and cam lobe and rocker arm may be slightly differant.

The chamber in the LP head must be fewer CC's than the gas head.
