I've been told a early M block like 1939, have more room for a crank. This I can't say is true. A "M" block you can bore out to 4.31, and a 400 - 450 block to about 4.42 bore. I found a good set up to be a 4.5 X 7.250 to 7.500 with H rods. It's not the biggest, but puts out good power, and will last. I know some people are going 5 X 8! But, will it live?
Good Luck!

About the only difference in the blocks is that the 264/281 have about an 1/8" more cyl wall thickness. If you're going big, you'll bore all of it out anyway. There's less to bore out on the standard M block and you can still make it as big as the super m or 400/450 blocks. I think the first thing I'd do is check the rules where you're planning on pulling. Some clubs don't allow non-oringinal blocks. Next try to make friends with someone who has built one of these engines before. There is a lot more involved than I ever realized. I wouldn't hesitate calling the folks at Lemmons either. Their primary business is selling pulling engines, but they've always been nice to me and have answered a few questions I had as well. Lots of luck, and let us know how it turns out!
