Hello,
was wondering if somebody can tell me exactly what you gain by running more RPMS then your tractor came with from the factory, like 10 or 20%, and does it really matter if you pull your engine down and the governor opens the butterfly valve on the carb all the way, i just dont get it.
will it make as much diffence on a JD as it does a IH or what, or maybe a WC allis
just wondering

The more RPM you're turning as you head down the track, the more momentum your engine and tractor has. Think about how much easier it is to start a load at a higher engine speed than a lower engine speed. The flywheel and other rotating components "store" energy that is released as the engine begins to lug down. The more speed there is, the more engergy there is to release. The next time you're changing a tire, spin it slowly and try to stop it, then spin it fast and try to stop it and notice how much more difficult it is to stop when spinning fast. That's not the most technical or exact explanation, but it all comes down to simple physics. You're comment about throttle valve position is correct. As long as the governor is opening it fully as the engine begins to lug down, it won't make a difference how fast the engine is turning at that point, but the momentum will. My two cents.

Over reving will also gain ground speed when stock rev's and the next higher gear causes lugging down to a stall.
