Burns,how did your ring gear separate and what kind of symtoms did it have?What kind of hp are you turning.And SEAMO would you recommend polishing up a new propane manifold before installation?Later fellas.

I was the first puller in the 8500# class. Got about half way down the track and it just stopped. I figured it jumped out of the hi/low range. Came around as the third puller and ended up winning the class (pulled fine). I pulled 7500# without any problem but my brother in law pulled in the 7500#, also until it stopped on him. This time it didn't matter what gear or hi/low range selection. It wouldn't move. The gear just slipped off the differential towards the driver side of the tractor. With the pto on the right, I guess it could have been rather ugly.

The differential has 3 pinholes equally spaced near the out edge. Centered on these holes are recessed pockets (both sides) to accept steel washers. The steel washer extend above the outer edge approx. 1/8". The ring gear has small pockets on the inner edge to index on the washers. Rivets are used to hold everything together. I ended up having a local machine shop drill 3 equally spaced holes along the seam of the ring gear and differential and pinned them. The sucker is either going to hold or break in a bunch of pieces.

The only symptom I noticed was when I would travel over rough terrain. I could hear a thump in the tranny. I am making the assumption it was the ring gear working back and forth on the washers until they finally sheared off. It actually wasn't to bad to fix all things to considered.

BTDT!! Had a similar problem with my 46 GM four years ago. It sheared the top half of the dowels off going down the track. Made a big bang and came to a sudden stop. Unhooked the sled and drove away. Went back and rehooked, but didn't get 50 feet that time. The gear was spinning around on the differential. It would move the tractor as long as it wasn't pulling anything. I had a spare assembly, so I went half way between the existing dowels, and drilled a hole between the ring and center, than took three dowels one size larger than the hole and drove them in. Being softer than the steel, the dowels sized themselfs as they were being drove in. Its been put to the test many trimes since, and doing good.

You may want to check the ring gears on your final dives. My G had not gone as far as yours but the differential ring gear had sheared the washers you mentioned about half way through. Both of the final drive gears on the axles had also sheared the washers one half to 2/3s through. I used a similar fix to your. I left the ring gears in the position I found them rather than trying to return them to their original positions. I drilled the ring gear to carrier joints at three equally spaced distances around the joint. I threaded the holes with fine threads and threaded and peened allthread into the holes (3/8 on the differential and 9/16 on the final drive gears). My tractor doesn't have that much power (pulls A class) but I think it pulled in a number of dead weight pulls before I got it.

Jack, Over the years I have inhaled a lot of cast iron dust. After we started dyno testing I found out I didnt have to do that. Match port your gaskets and manifold & head. Put your manifold on with the valves out with mirrors or bore scope align every thing up. They will shift around. Smooth your casting up take out the big humps.It doesn't have to be like a mirror. Don't forget to adjust your gov. rod to the carb. Have you done the head?? Lets GO PULLING!!!!! 4cyl.& 6cyl thats a different story. I like the mud pumper on those after you match port.
