I picked this tractor up at a yard sale for $300.00 . After putting a new batt. in (6v) and starting I heard a really bad knock. so to make a long story short I ended up over hauling the engine. Rings, pistons, liners and bearings.I got the head machined and new valves. I finished off with a tune up and a carb kit. I worked most of the bugs out but a couple things. My first problem is when I go to the tractor pulls towards the end of the track my tractor wont lug down at all as soon as it gets a hard pull it acts like I just hit the kill switch the tires wont even think of breaking loose. But the tractor runs really good the rest of the time. My other problem is the carb. I believe I have the settings right. But if I dont shut the fuel off after running it the fuel will drip out the air cleaner, but I assume the float setting is right.I would also like to know what the best way of turning up the govener is. HELP !!!!! !!!!

Do you have an inline fuel filter after the sediment bowl? I had one which was for a fuel system with a fuel pump (pressurized) and when the fuel got below 1/2 or 2/3 tank the carb would starve. The filter was on there when I bought the tractor. It would flow great when not connected to the carb. Threw it away and the tractor has ran great ever since. Someone told me later that you need a non-pressurized filter (such as the ones for Kolher lawn mower engines) because the filter paper is more open and not as restrictive. Good Luck.

checking the fuel tank breather is a good idea. But I still cant get the rpms out of the tractor. When I went to time the engine I could turn the mag full left and full right and it didnt seem to make any changes to the way the engine sounded.I guess Ill through the timing light on it?

A heavier spring will give more rpm, or wire two or four coils together on your current spring for the same effect.

Heard a real odd fuel problem at a pull today. Man said he had chased a fuel starvation problem for several weeks. Problem was solved when he found a LEAF in the gas tank. Sometimes the leaf would cover the pickup, sometimes not. This is probably not you problem, but the moral is DO NOT RULE OUT ANYTHING. Good Luck.

Check your timing with an advance timing light. If you have step head pistons / fire crater pistons you probably have to much advance. Specs on H's with increased power kits are 30 deg total advance.

Sounds like the govenor isn't coming-on. Start at the throttle handle and check the linkage for loose slack all the way to the govenor housing. Remove the govenor and clean in it really good. Check to see that everything works freely. When reinstalled, check the adjustment of the vertical arm that turns the shaft which is connected to the carb butterfly. When the vertical arm is all the way up, the butterfly should be fully open and the clevis pin connection is not in a bind.

Buy an IT shop manual, it will explain this and carb adjustment in reasonable detail.

Find someone in your area with a dyno. The time spend with it will be pay big returns. Good Luck.

Thanks for the response. The gov. is timed with the carb. but I guess Ill still have to double check the linkage. I had my dad watch the sediment bowl at the fuel tank while I was pulling and he said it looked like it sucked the bowl dry, but when I disconected the fuel line from the carb. and ran it into a bucket the bowl never empted . There was a good steady flow of fuel. I also was wondering if I put a heavier spring in for the gov. weight will that let me get more rpm ? Any help would be greatly welcomed

I have a similar problem with my H farmall, Pulls really strong till it starts to lug down then just falls flat on it's face.
From what you posted about the fuel bowl going dry it just may have a problem with the fuel cap vent being plugged up. Now I'll have to go check out mine too!
