I am gearing up to go to some tractor events within the next month or so. I have just refurbished a 1951 "M" that is a "PUFF"....engine was totally fresh in 1987 and has about 70 hours on it. It's got 14.5 X38 rears and totally stock motor. Is there a weak link in the tractor when I get into some serious pulling? Clutch, transmission,or any driveline issues I need to be aware of? How far down should you allow the engine to labor before stopping the pull? about to a stall? I am really looking forward to latching on to a sled with this "BIG RED".....your feedback appreciated.

Recheck everything. Make sure the engine is tuned as per the factory spec's (plus you can advance the timing and run higher octane fuel). Rent, borrow, a dyno and get it tuned just right!

You can get several more hp from carb, intake, exhaust, and head work. It takes time, common sense, and many hours of die grinder work.

Weak spots---check the transmission and differental. Clean everything throughtly and check all bearings. REPLACE (no matter how good it looks) the first bearing on the input shaft after the clutch. This is the first bearing to go, especially if hp and torque are increased. This info was given to me just in time (I came very close to shelling this bearing) and I tell everyone I can to spend and twenty dollars and not worry. Good Luck.

Don't be disappointed if it doesn't do what you expect. Pulls are getting tougher and tougher all the time even in the stock classes. Which are not even stock anymore. About the only thing stock is the "HITCH". I think in that tractor you may have the 11 inch clutch instead if the 10 1/2. I don't think you you are going to hurt it anyway. You will know when to stop as the sled will stop moving and the flag man will be waving a bright red flag to keep you from digging hole in the track if you haven't killed it by then.
Good Luck. Weight placement is a critical item.
