Head question

I've restarted this under a different subject to prompt a response, maybe nobody pulls these things? My brothers have a Farmall 560 diesel that had a head gasket leaking. Well the head is off and we decided to have the head plainned and do a valve job. We pulled at three pulls last year, so we're pretty much greenhorns still when it comes to pulling. We're wondering if just cleaning the head up is enough or should we shave more off and how much? And is there any benefit in porting and polishing and who knows how to do it on a Farmall head? Thanks Todd

Todd, I do not have any direct experience with the 560 diesel so I do not know how bad a case of asthma they have. More air plus more fuel equals more power. More air will not hurt a diesel, you can go too far with a gas tractor. With a diesel you do not have to worry about fuel seperation and/or keeping the air velocity up. Go ahead and port and polish if you like. It can't hurt.

I don't think shaving the head will help a lot. On a diesel the compression is already fairly high. Check the rest of the intake and exhaust system for restrictions in flow. Convert to a high flow dry air clearer instead of the oil bath unit for pulling.

Cubic inches is where it's at if you have to stay naturally aspirated. Can you swap in 806 piston/crank to get more cubes? You just might want to swap in the whole engine as that seems to be what most 460/560 pullers start with.

Hopefully someone with first hand experience will step forward and give you a hand.

As an IH puller I would have to know more about the class you pull your tractor. In my experiences I have found that like everything else bigger is better! Especially cubes, but if you decide go bigger stroke it!!! That is where you get your power. As for swapping motors I don't believe it is posable with the diesel. For the 806 had a different series motor. however the 706 motor might work. Only the gas tractors would be able to swap. Do port and polish your cylinder head air flow is key!

You could always turn the rpm up. The only real difference between a 560 and a 660 engine is rpm. I seem to remember the 660 is rated at 2600 rpm plus a bit more at high idle. That may or may not be an opton given your local rules.
