I am looking at buying a JD R i own and pull a farmall SM. I have never seen a JD R pull. Does anyone know what weight class the R would be best to pull in. And the does and donts of pulling the JD R. There seems to be a lot of diference in pulling a JD compared to pulling a farmall.

I had an R and the problem I found was it was outclassed to soon because it was pulling against 4020's and big IH's at the Fair pulls.
I had around 75 hp. Was told that 100+ was a gamble because the R don't have the center main that the other 2cyl Diesels do and could have crank failure.Over 75hp you may need it bored with 820-830 pistons and injectors.

I guess it depends on what you are pulling against in your area. G or a 70 covers a broader range of weight classes where they can be competative.

The R without water in the tires, and 18.4x34 it should weigh in about 7400-7500lbs, that is for just the tractor.. if you want to pull in the 7500lbs class you will need to drop a few lbs. Find a way to install, pressed wheels.. It should not take much $$$ to get close to 100hp, but after that it really get $$$$$... Good Luck with the R..
