I am concidering buying a international to pull with. I don't plan on doing a lot of modification, and still plan to use it on the farm. While checking some sites online I came across a International 1468, and I really like the high cubes it has with the V8 engine. Is this a good tractor to look for? Can the pump be turned up a lot like on the 1486, 1066 and expect good engine life? How rare are these, and what would be a decent price to pay for one?
I don't know what model to get, and am looking for some good advice...
Thanks
Dan

Don't get a v-8, if you want to do farm pulling. I'm talking about the real stock pulling. We take our 1486 (with the cab and all) move the drawbar in (but it still stick out about a foot), and the beat the crap out of anyone who comes our way. That would include a 1466, 1468, 1256, all without out cabs and a better drawbar set up than ours. Just a stock tractor, it does have a rebuilt motor and trans at 7 grand a piece, and the pump is turned up to about 160 hp. Works great in the field and the track.

The v-8 is not the best in either IH or MF but with enough money they can be made to run. Personally if I was going to multi-use one and wanted an 8 cylinder then I would use the 2255 Oliver or 2180 White(I don't care which color u like the Cat will make power). The v8 is different and therefore would be a welcome change from the inline crowd. Best of luck.

There is a tractor bashing board made just for inbreeds like you. Check the archives here for a URL. If that takes more brains than you can muster, maybe one of the other gentlemen here will help you out.

I have a JD 4020 that I pull in the non turbo class, and I do ok with it... Now i want to get into the turbo class, but there aren't any JDs that I would want to do this with(I could never win in the turbo class with a JD)... I respect the pros and cons of both colors...

I have heard that although this is a great engine it was really meant as a truck engine. It didn't really have the greatest torque for pulling. Great for most farm work today but was not real good with a plow

I had a 1468 and it always liked fuel. but was a pain in the butt. I had alot of problems with it. I always thought that they were weak in the motors. just my 2 cents

1468's are great to have but don't plan on pulling with one and being able to compete. Stick with the six cyl. for pulling will have alot better luck. Thanks

why won't they be competative? With that many cubes i think that if they were set up right they could turn a lot of power. I have never seen one, nor know anyone who has one, so i am completely clueless about them.

These other guys are right. The IH v-8 is hard to make run. From what I've seen the heads are a limiting factor. You can have all the cubes in the world, but it takes air and fuel to make em run. I think that there is a reliability issue with the block and crank also. If you are stuck on a v-8, the Perkins 640 would allow big cubes, but there heads are limiting as well. Best of luck.

There is a guy here in SW WI that pulls with a 1468 in the 9500# class and does fairly well. He will beat the JD boys' 4020s.

Friend of mine has one. Won't pull it. Parts are too hard to come by, and too expensive. Instead, he bought an 1150 MF to pull so that he could pull a V8 diesel.

He has a hard row to hoe to keep up with the inline engines. He has them in cubes, but they have a definite torque advantage with the inline. He is strongly considering selling the 1150, and going to an inline engine.
