Pulled my 49 JD B for the first time, and did ok for a beginner, but would appreciate some advice. Our Antique Tractor Club allows stock engines only. The engine had plenty of power, but I lost traction early. Tires are 11.2-38, drawbar height was 16" (20" allowed). Weighed in at 4450 for 4500# class. Should I get wider tires? If so, which ones? Raise the drawbar? Lenghten or shorten the drawbar? Just wanta be competitive while having fun. Any inputs will be appreciated. (Other than a different color tractor) Thanks!

i pull a 1951 "B" John Deere and the motor is completly stock and i put a pair of 15-5-38 good years on the back put a pair of 13" car tires on the front and raised the drawbar up to 20" and i have brought home 5 trophys in the 5,000-5500 pound classes and have plenty of power.I recomend u put a weight bracket in the front, back and the middle.and some wheeley bars. let me know if u want to know how i raised the drawbar. good luck Dustin M.

I also pull a 1950 john deere B. my tractor is completly stock. i also have 11.2 -38 tires. there are small but i found they do well on hard tracks. another important thing with the tires is not so much the size but the tire pressure. you always want to get as close to the weight limit as possible. you will do better with a raised draw bar this will put a better pull down on your tractor. i always keep my drawbar close to the tractor, but you can get more front end lift with an extended drawbar. the most important thing i found about pulling my b i have the weights disturated properly. i know you can't add much weight when pulling 4500 lbs class. thats why i prefer to pull the 6000 or 7500 lb class with my B. My average for last year in the 6000 lb class was 136%. Please feel free to email me if ya have any other questions.

Most clubs limit how close the hitch point is to the center of the rear axles (usually 18"). To get 20" on the height, you can make a new hitch ring out of thick steel. By using washers and two long bolts, you can adjust your hitch point to whatever the rules are for height. If you stay with the stock drawbar, I would suggest making some type of setup that supports the drawbar from bending down. If you have any questions drop me an email.

Raise the drawbar to class legal max.Gets the weight off the sled pan ( extra friction) & onto the drive tires ( less load to pull & more traction). A shorter drawbar bends less & rear tires with more air pressure squat down less. Ajust the drawbar & for/aft weights so front wheels are just occassionaly lifting off the ground as the rears spin out.

I also pull a stock 47B. I started with 12.4 at first-4500lb the tire wasn't bad. But in 5500lb I dropped out early, had the power but not the traction. Then I put on 13.6 and was pretty good, but I only had 11inch rims. Then I got 13 inch rims and then she had all the traction in the world.

Start out by raising and shortening the drawbar first.
