Anybody else play on the track with one of these? The wife picked one up this winter, and she is going to try to pull it. We know it's outclassed in div 2, but going to try anyway.

It has the flathead Chrysler, with the smaller block that came in these originally. Looking for cheap hp, but still keep it div 2 legal. Probably going to run the 45 degree bar 12x38's that are on it, and a lower drawbar, to help keep the rpms up with a little extra slippage. Afraid that if it does get a bite, it will fall off flat even quicker than I expect.

I own a Custon Model B that has the 230 Chy. in it. Don't sell the little motor short. It has more stroke than the 251, and a little less than the 265. It will turn some rpm's. I can turn about 5500 pretty easily. The only thing I did to it was align bore the crank and balance the engine. I also had the crank cross drilled to provide more oil to middle of the engine. During the winter I bought a 2 carb. manifold for it. Presently I am running the outlaw classes. The little 230 makes life hard for the 400+ Oliver boys. I don't win a lot but they sure hate to see me coming. I had a lot of fun finding out about the Chy. engines.

There has been a lot of engines put in M-H"s a lot had to do with the dealer. At this period of time there was a tractor war going on between different type of tractors.Cockshut Coop and yes JD. One thing on the Chry. engines watch what pressure plate you put on flywheel.get a good racing one or puller set up. All of these engines can crank up 6000 to 6500 RPM ( Butch) 40 year puller of Chry Massey's

The 308 is a Hudson. I have one of those. Thought about using it but it's 4 inches longer. I would have had to cut my frame to get it in. I don't know if it will go in a massey but if it will I would like to know. I am hunting something to put it in. The 308 Hudson is some motor. The torque curve on a stock engine is unbelievable.

If you'd like to stay in the Chrysler family, the big block industrials are rare but they are out there. There are 306, 331, 377 and 413 CID flat head sixes. It took me 5 years to find my 413. It's quite an impressive beast, but I have yet to gain the ambition to shoehorn it in the 101 frame.

The Hudson is in the Chry. family. Chry. bought Hudson out. All rights are now Chry.So presumably this would be a legal swap. Hudson was used after the sellout as industrial engines. The reason I like them is they already have all the nice goodies done to them. They (certain models) come with the angled valves that are recessed. There are parts still available from CLIFFORD.He was the man that said 6=8.He did a lot of experimenting with the 308.There are also a lot of people out there running them on the street now that the Street rod craze has hit. If you hear of anyone with a 308 in anything let me know. I am looking for a something to put one in.

No kidding? I am somewhat familiar with Clifford's work with the Hudson and their go fast parts, but I missed the section about Chrysler buying Hudson out. This adds a new twist to what is a "legal replacement engine". However, based upon past experiences with my 101, any time a massey beats an Oliver, the massey will be illegal - hands down, no discussion. It doesn't matter if you are running a big Continental, Chrysler or Hudson. As one good ol' boy running a pull last summer told me, "a Massey should never beat an 88 and if it does, you are a cheatin'!"

1st off, mill the head. I can't tell you how much is safe, but I would guess around 100 thousands would be safe with around stock rpm. Of course the main thing is to make sure the valves clear. Some of the garden tractor guys mill their heads at an angle to give more clearance over the valves, but still reduce the combustion chamber size. This may be a pain on a 6 because you would have to re-machine a lot of bolt holes. If you have lots of time, you can also make a thin head gasket out of copper. Of course port and polish can't hurt either. Go check out the Yahoo forum for flatheads. They are more geared to singles, but the same technology applies. Enjoy!

The 101 SR use to be pretty tough to beat around here, but I suspect they ran the bigger Mopar engines in them.

Didn't the seniors run Continentals?

Group -

The 101 Senior came factory with a Continental F226 flathead six. The 101 Junior came factory with a Continental flathead 4 cyl (unsure of model). The 101 Super was factory equipped with the Chrysler Industrial 32 engine. The 101 Supers that are seen pulling, often have the 265 cube Chrysler "SpitFire" engine swapped where the original (230 cube?) Industrial 32 was. This SpitFire is good for about 100 HP with high rpm's.

Interesting, the Nebraska test record incicate that all models of the 101 six cylinder model tested were equipped with Chrysler engines. Di Massey Harris change engines depending on what was available? Or were the models with the Continental engine not tested? Just trying to learn.

I seem to remember that the 265 Chrysler is about 2" langer than its smaller cousins.

I believe you will find that 102Sr's were the Canadian version of the 101 Sr. This is similar to how the 201's and 202's were numbered. The only difference that I know of is that the Canadian versions were built with magnetos as opposed to coil/distributor. Check to see if your books agree....

I do not doubt you about the info on 101's. All published info for these does not seem to agree. I am not even sure how I KNOW that these are the correct engines, but they are!

You are right about the SpitFire! It is a little longer but it will go! The nice thing about it is there are very few pullers who know Masseys well enough to identify the SpitFire truck engine when it has been swapped in!

Okay, what about the Kaiser Supersonic engine in Massey 44-6 tractors. I have run across two which appear to be original installations. Almost all have the engine tagged as a Continental. I do know that Continental was owned by Kaiser so the engines are the same as far as I know (226 cubic inches).

I do not know about those particluar engines, but I am pretty sure that they are either special request factory installs or very well thought installs by an individual. I be willing to bet that you would not recognize a 265 in a 101 or 44-6 unless you have two setting beside each other!

Actually give me a tape measure and I'm fairly sure I can do it :-). I am sure that I can tell th difference between the Continetal and Chrysler flat head sixes without them sitting next to each other and without the tape measure. That takes the 44-6 out of the confusion. Actually what you need to do is swap the Continental six from the MH 203 into a 44-6 for some fun times.

In 1938 massey started 101 production with a 201cid chrysler. Between 1938 & 1942 The 101 went from a 101 to a 101 super to a 101 senior. The engines went from the 201 to a 217 to a 241 to a 251 cid. After 1942 all the 101 seniors had contintenal engines. The 101 sr had a 226cid high comp. gas. The 102 sr G had a 244 low comp. gas and the 102 sr had a 244 cid with even lower comp.

The M330 Continental, to which you refer, would provide quite a ride in either the 101 Senior or 44-6! However, if you REALLY want turn some heads, you would drop in a B427 Continental flathead six out of a Fox corn chopper. I believe that these engines were also used in some brand/model of WWII tanks....
