Nitrous in a JD G?!?

OK, I know this idea's out there, but here goes anyway.

The JD G that my brother pulls needs more HP. Is there any way to pipe a *small* amount of NOS into the intake? Can the NOS be regulated along with the throttle? In other words, can the NOS come on lightly at half throttle and increase until full throttle?

Anybody got any ideas? The Super Antique class we pull in is pretty much anything goes. The people who run the pull have flatly stated "If you're brave enough to ride it, you can pull it."

I don't want anything too radical, just maybe another 25 horses.

Thanks,
James

Something else to consider when running nitrous is the type of piston you have. If you're still running the stock cast iron pistons, I would stay away from the laughing gas, as they may not be up to the challenge of dealing with the increased cylinder pressures that nitrous will generate. You will probably be okay with aluminum pistons, but even those are only cast, and not forged. You will also want to step the heat range of your plugs down a couple notches to keep cylinder temps under control. Good luck with the nitrous and post back with some results. I will be surprised if it gets you 25 horsepower, because that is basically a 75 or 80% improvement over stock HP. Kind of like a 300 horse shot in a 400 horse small-block Chevy, probably not real safe. Make sure your internals are in good shape.

Be sure you have a good strong bottom end(new bearings},nitrous will give you HP,but that extra HP was not desgined into a stock engine..... if the engine is near needing a re build don't do it..... .

The rear end and crank are in great shape, but thanks for the warning.

Have you considered nitromethane?

Thanks for the replies. We didn't build this tractor, but we do know that it has already had the head and block shaved and the camshaft has been reground to a Mack truck profile. (?!?!)

We may just try it to see. I found a chart that said that a 0.60 millimeter orfice would give 25 horsepower. I know where I can borrow a bottle and a selenoid. If it works, I'll post it here. Won't know till the pull at the end of the month, though.

If you dont inject extra fuel you WILL run too lean and fry stuff

My research also said that a fuel pump running at 10psi sould require a jet the same size as the NOS jet to provide the correct mixture. I'll try doing it that way.

What JDGnut said is correct - especially the part about adding fuel. A nitrous system, whether it be a port set-up or a plate system, injects nitrous oxide AND additional fuel to keep from leaning out the engine. Nitrous is not some miracle power adding fuel, it is an oxygen bearing gas and it simply increases the amount of oxygen going into the engine. Without more fuel, you lean the mixture and can ruin an engine. To get enough fuel pressure to properly atomize it coming out of a spray bar, you would have to install an electric fuel pump, pressure regulator and so on. Good old gravity feed just ain't gonna do it. Most nitrous systems are also designed for wide open throttle use above 2500 rpm or so. You would also have to play with your timing to prevent detonation. It's not just something you can bolt on and go play with, especially when you're basically engineering a system from scratch. You would be much better off with one of the traditional ways of increasing power - more displacement, more compression, better carburetion, head work, electronic ignition and so on, instead of tinkering with nitrous.

NOS is not easily controled like U are wanting.. best for multiple ranges is to stage it.. Most systems are set up to run at only WOT because you need the fuel for the NOS, or it will run lean, and toast the pistons....
