JD Puller B or H or M or L? Which is most fun?

I have a JD G Puller. At pulls, I have to wait for the light, little tractors. I think I can fit a little JD on my trailer and use my same weights. My G would like a little brother. Should I start out with a B, H, M, or L? I own a late model B. How much can I do to make it competitive for less than $1000? Thanks.

We've go a 40 JD and it pulls real well. On hard pulling tracks it will even give some wc's a run. Although the flag man has to stop and wait for it acouple of times.( low is really slow. )

Build a B it will pull in 4000 lb. to 5500 lb. we have one we pull in 4850 & 5600 does well it has a set of 16.9 /38 super all traction firestones it will spin'em out ever time. In our club we rotate pull light up next pull heavy down.

Not trying to start a war here, or sound smart a**, but we have the same problem; waiting to pull the 70, we watched a while, wanted something light and easy to haul, but could span quite a few classes and be competitive (all Div 1) and settled on a Super C. We pull #3500-#5000 with her, win our share and usually top 3. Next year sans quick hitch, we'll try #3000 too. If we had it to do over again we'd go with an Oliver Super 66 though. No offense, I love the 2 cylinders(our '50 B is my personal favorite out of our whole collection) but they just can't hang with the Super C's, Super 66's or even the WD's in Div. 1. Farmall weights are a dime a dozon too. As far as Div II, we don't pull in it, but there are 2 Super 66's and a Super C that come to almost every pull our club has, and I've never seen anyone beat those 3, but they put on one heck of a show with each other! One Super 66 owned by a guy named Hal Monell usually wins 'em though. Pete

I have seen the the B's do well in 3500#-5000# classes. I have also seen the H's and M's win the 2750# classes in stiff competition, the M's can run in the 3500# also. I have never seen the L's pulled, I don't believe they have enough HP for the 2750#. Any of the three listed above would be alot of fun to pull!
I am doing the same thing you are, setting up a B for 3500#-4500#. I already pull a JD-G 5500#-7000#, and am bored waiting for the heavier classes, so I will take the B along to break up the boredom.

i have a 39 H. would rather have built up an M instead now. there's not much room in the head for modification...much more in an M. bored over 0.25", stroked only 1/2". engine ballanced and blueprinted to 8,000 rpm. had to get custom push rods from a hot hod shop in california. would like to max out engine more, but have no more time to pull! dynos 83 hp. for sale

I would probably stay away from the H due to the camshaft design. By design, I don't feel I would invest much in "performance" modifications. The B would probably be the best choice. Trouble with the later B's is the weight. If you are running cast centers you are going to be pulling 4500#. A lot of good running tractors can fit in 4500.

I pulled my B last year on blacktop with a 2 row cultivator on. It weighed 5000# with me on it. I placed 4th in a Pure Stock class. I took the cultivator off this year and it weighs 4400# now (counting me). I for sure want to be able to use 9 bolt pressed steel wheels. Where do I find some 9 bolt hubs? or do I make them? How much weight would I save?

I have a good set of 11x38 9 bolt wheels I'd like to get rid of if anyone has a use for them. Also a 14x38 9 bolt. The wheels live in NY w/ me on the Vt border

As far as suppliers, I'd try Wilson farms or M.E Miller (both in Ohio). If you get a set of press steel centers off a set of IH duals, they tend to be a little thicker compared to Deere centers. With the powertrol off, new 13.6x38 F&R tires, Deere centers, couple gallons of gas, and my fat 225# butt--I can pull our 48 A in the 4500# class. I would suspect that you can drop an easy 800# with the press steel centers on your B.

Our club pulls 8500, 3500, 3750, 7500, 4000, 4500, 6500, 5500.

I pull a 49 B, we have a 3800 lb class and I get in that (I weigh 260)have 13.6 x 38 4 ply on pressed steel wheels, no powertrol or pto. It has .045 over M&W pistons pulls good in 2nd gear. In top 4 most of the time.

I had the same problem, i had to wait most of the time till 3 or 4 before i started to pull. So i had a 49 MT and i said what the heck i think ill try it and no i regret i didnt do it earlier. Ive taken it to 2 pulls and pulled it 4 times and have gotten a 1st 2 2nds and 1 3rd, they make good little pulling tractors. But any of the ones you listed would all be fun.
just my 2cents
