I have been working on a stock 1940 Farmall H. It has 13.5 X 38 tires with rear wheel weights. The tread is about 1/2. I just removed the calcium, cleaned and repaired, and painted the rear rims. I have new 600 X16 tires on the front. I don't know much about classes or ? I am planning on pulling it on Oct 13. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
D

First off, welcome! Second, all pullers are full of - you know what, but that's part of the fun. And third, enjoy yourself. If you can - hook up to a good size tractor, and have them jump on the breaks a little bet. Pull the thing around, and get used to reading the track for holes, and the feel of the tractor. Don't get upset the first time out. Every dog has his day, and we all got to start somewhere. Go to the pull early, and ask if you could have a courtesy pull, just to try the tractor out, tell the sled man this is your first pull, he will probally work with you. Give him 5 or 10 bucks for the hook.
Good Luck! P.S. Make sure you give the tractor a basic tune up. Another words, make sure the tractor runs good before your bring it out to the track.

Watch the pullers in front of you and watch what they do and learn from them and make sure you can put hp to the ground and do not spin out good luck and let me know how you do

The best piece of adveice I can give is - try not to be the first puller. You have to learn to read the track and watch the experienced pullers. Do what the guy who's consistantly doing well is doing. Ask a lot of questions, the majority of pullers are very greatful in giving advice. I've been to pulls where the old farmers come in with cow sh*t still on the tires work those old machines down the track like magic - it will take a while but you have to get a feel for "your" machine and know what she's gonna do at every second your hooked. Thats what makes a puller!

I'll give you the best advice I have ever heard, I got it when I made my first pull by a guy who has been doing it for years. He said " Once your on the track and hooked to the sled, look around at everybody, smile, let out on the clutch, pull the throttle back and go as far as you can!!!" LOL!!! Been doing that for a year and a half now and finally won a pull last weekend. Have done pretty good after buying a different tractor but man have I had a blast!!!!

As the man said though, as you get more serious about it talk to the other people at the pulls and get their ideas. Most are more than willing to help and are really a bunch of nice guys. Don't get too serious about it though or you will probably stay mad alot. It is good to win but remember that you can't win them all:) But it sure is fun to try !!! LOL!!!!!

I pulled my H for a year and half, got started late the first yr. I was told the H would not do well because horsepower was to small for the waight class but thay were wrong most of the time. Tractor is a 1947, new overhaul and new tires, all I could find, one IH. wt. on each wheel, another IH. wt. on drawbar and a 60# small wt. also on drawbar, me in the seat made total wt. of 4600#. We do not have 4000# class. Tires are 13.6 by 38. This would get me in the top 3 with no more then 1 and 1 half inch between us. On a hard track I would power out befor the 77 ollie and A j.d., on soft track I could come out on top. Just get out their and do your best. Big Red

First bit of advice....have fun

Depending on your size, a stock H shouldn't have much trouble fitting in a 4000#-up class. We have a show H that we will occasionally pull and it is darn near original as you can get. It has trouble beyond 4500# not because of power but more with the competition. In 5500#, you pull against JD A & G's, Farmall M-450.

In regards to your setup, hitch should be as high as the rules allow and as close as you can get it to the tractor without violating the rules. Air pressure should be between 9-13 depending on the rim and condition of the tires.

Finish off by having fun

Thanks Burns! I feel better now. I didn't want to make a fool of myself but I want to have some fun too. My 12 year old son wants to drive some too. I hope they allow him. Is there usually an age limit?

I agree with Burns! HAVE FUN FIRST. I don't know where you are pulling but most places will let you waive age if skill is present and parents agree. You may want to consider some weight for the front if the track hooks hard. Just talk to the folks at the pull you can gain a wealth of knowledge from them, most will help all they can. Watch what others in your class do and if all else fails ask BIG DADDY on this page for his insight. Again have FUN and good luck
