G- flat head?

I want to put a flat head on my 1952 G. What mods. are required to do this? Also what is the corect casting # on the head?

You will also need to cut the push rods to compensate for the 1" shorter head. I have a late block with a flat head and M&W pistons and mine runs good on a mixture of three gallons of 114 octane and 2 gallons of 93 octane.

The "good luck" bigmotors mentioned is probably due to that they are not real plentiful and can be rather expensive. If you have aluminum pistons in your G already, your compression will be beyond the use of regular pump gas. The lugging ability will be effected a little. I had to shave my aluminum piston heads a couple times to achieve the desired compression ratio after installing a flathead. If you plan on running a lot of compression, you may need to "pin" the head for support to eliminate the flexing that the flat heads are known to do.

What compression ratio would you recommend for Div. II with .125 overbore, flat head and stock cam? The owner before me cut my G's aluminum pistons down to a 8:1 compression ratio. I think he probably cut them too much. I'm planning to resore some compression this winter and would appreciate some advise on what to shoot for in terms of compression ratio. Thanks

Like Burns said.. everyone has their opinion about the compression ratio, and cylinder PSI.. there have been some heated discussion on this site about CR's... Like Burns, some cut down the tops of the pistons... some just put the flathead on.. and other shave down the block for more compression... all up to U.. I have seen all work good, just depends on where and what class you are going to pull in.. Also check your rules.. some clubs don't allow the flathead in the Div II classes.. Good Luck

The level of compression is a matter of opinion. My opinion is that compression is a cheap hp gain. Because a Deere has a power stroke every 540 degrees of crankshaft rotation, I didn't what a excessively high compression reading (220+ psi) knowing that I would need to lug the engine down while pulling the heavier classes. I also factored in the longevity of the motor life. Schooler and Merfeld tend to recommend an 8-9:1 compression ratio with their stroker cranks. I was shooting for around 180-200 psi as a benchmark for my application. With a stock intake runner, stock carb diameter, stock valves, M&W pistons and stock, factory flat head: I was pushing close to 245 psi. Because I made changes at different times (ported/polished the head, changed the intake filter system, altered the carb), I had to adjust the piston height accordingly. I think if you stay below 210 you should be just fine. My 2 cents

You want a F486R flat head. The early G blocks with the small water inlet is a F49R flat head - this will not work. The F486R will bolt right on.
