I bought an A this fall with a "60" head and dulex carb. It dynos 36 HP and when pulled down the AHP will raise to 41. The club that I have been pulling with has DQ me (and ritefully so) I have been pulling with them four 4 weeks to just learn the tractor and the tracks. I am going to install the proper head and carb and I want to get to 50 HP. From what I have heard I need to make a flat head ported, mill the head and block, and install aluminum pistons (I think they are in there now, but not sure). I will also get a good carb. With this info who would you suggest for the head work? Does anyone have a head set up for sale? How much can I exspect for the head and machine work? I have modified small block Chevys, but never a tractor. It is pretty much all the same but different. THANKS for all the info in advance BUDD

I have a 47 JD-A with a powerblock, 6.125 bore (not stroked, not a flat head) with aluminum high compression pistons and three angle valve job, head and intake ported, head milled down into the eye brows, block shortened .125, without a pulling cam and it dyno's at 55hp with a mag. You might get more than that with a distributor. It is very competitive in 4500#-6000#. Check to see what the price of a powerblock is before committing to the flat head as the price may be the same. Just my 2 cents.

2 Clyd. I can not run a power block in farm stock class with our club. Does a Dist. work better than a Mag? My "A" worked fairly good until I worked on the tires, now I have plenty of bite but not enough power. I have been pulling at 195%ish most of the time. It has taken any where from 207% to 221% to win though. I am in this for the fun and the sound of a 2 banger, but I plan on winning sometimes if I can. Last Sunday was the last points pull. Anyone could have drove my tractor and got 193% like I did. Let the clutch out open the throtal and go until it dies. I was a little upset after this pull to say the least. THANKS FOR THE INFO BUDD

I can get a few extra horses out of my JD-G (on the dyno) running a distributor over my hot magneto, because you can adjust the distributor farther than the slot will allow on the magneto. Next thing is to try this on my JD-A. Just my 2 cents.

You won't find an A flat head very often, and, Your better off with a reguler A head, and do some polish and porting, big valves...so on.
