I need to replace the camshaft in my SMTA, end broken where it goes into the cam gear. According to the IH service book it is best to put in one from a 400 as it gives more power. Has anyone had any experience with that? Is the valve setting differnet on the 400?

My book says that a SM cam is the same as a 400 and a 450 but an M cam is different..

Thanks for the help, I have the Blue Ribbon Service book for Super M-TA and it said to use the 400 cam, I also have a parts book for the Super M and Super MTA and the part number shown in the service book for the 400 is different that the one listed in the parts book, could be old parts book though I suppose. Have one coming for a 400 so will see what happens. The end of the camshaft broke out next to the key. Had live hydraulic pump of course.

You could have a new key slot cut 180 degrees off
and then mark the gear with a new timing gear the
same.
