I want to build up my tractor to pull in 5500 to 6500 pound classes. I would be pulling in classes that would be 1st gear stock RPM only or 3mph 20% over RPM pulls. My M is a 41 and right now weighs 5370 lbs w/o me on it. I want to sleeve the engine to 4" bore with flat top pistons, with stock stroke. I would like to put a 450 lp head or mill down the distillate head on it to get more comp (7 or 8 to 1 maybe ??) Would also go to a 450 manifold and carb and get flow bench work done on the head, manifold and carb. My question is will this give me enough HP to pull in the classes I mentioned? I know the rest of it, especially in the classes I mentioned, falls on knowing how to set up the weight on the tractor, tires, hitch and skill. Just would like to know if these engine mods will give me enough ponies, or do I need to go a little farther? Thanks for any help or comments.

Your 41 M should get down to about 4700# (maybe less) if your body weight is about 200# and the belt drive, hydro pump and cast wheels are removed. This will give you some very valueable moveable weight and may get you into the 5000 class if your club has one. If you don't mind spending about $400-500, bore the block and put 4 1/8 or 4 1/4 pistons in. The price of piston and sleeves is the same. Some will say different, but I like flat tops. They seem to hang in there longer under a BIG load. The 400-450 gas manifold is good and can be had for around $125-150. The distillate head will NOT safely plane to 8:1 with flat tops. 400-450 gas heads are good (and still reasonably priced) 450 LP heads are WAY overpriced. I have an 8060 head (high comp. late M) I would sell. Send me a reply if your interested. Use the bowl and venturi from an 806 gas, this will help. If your planning on a professional flow job, GREAT, it will definitly make hp. If your going to do it yourself, get the die grinder and just SMOOTH everything up, this will make some hp too. Find a 450 gas/lp cam, they are suppost to have more lift (I can't confirm this as I have never measured one). Build a good, tight engine and you should be able to pull in first or second gear at 3 mph/20% over, depending on the looseness of the track. Keep us posted.

Doug, if Carp isn't interested in the Gas head (8060), I'd be willing to take it off you hands...
Call me days (608)787-4296, or (608)788-1088 Nights... (I'm located in WI) Thanks...

I have a farmall m and we bored it out to a 4 1/8 w/ a 450 gas head. With a straight pipe and w/o an air filter hose you can crank out 80 HP. This is the way to go if you have the money.

Thanks for all the info. It will be very helpful. I never even really thought about using a 450 cam. I don't know if I have anyone in the area that will bore the block, and I have heard that if you go to big on an older M you have a 50 50 chance of hitting water. Again, thanks for the help and I will keep everyone posted.

If they are are green, that's cause you let them set outside and get moldy. You know they was red to begin with.

On a four banger you should be able to use one head off a v8. Call Bear or the board to find out how. YOu won't need to cut or weld since it is not a six banger. Will work out great.
