Which is a better tractor for pulling. The class allows 300 cubic inch engine, one(1) turbo 3inch in and 3 inch out,any rpm,24.5-32 tires, diesels, weight 6500 pounds.

Does a 666 have a turbo?
Does a 766 have a turbo?
Or are there after market turbos for those two.
What other Interrnational tractors are recommendend for this class?
Can a tractor with out a turbo be competative aganist one that has a turbo?
Please help? Any info appericated.
Thanks

My family used to own a IH dealership in the 70s and 80s and I know first hand that a 666 came out of the factory with a non-turbo 312 c.i. motor and the 766 came out of the factory with a non-turbo 360 c.i. engine, I have a uncle with a 686 with the 312 c.i. engine with a M&W turbo on it and its cranking a easy 100hp and he only farms, you could easily get probably 150 to 200 maybe with just a little fine tuning and those 666s are lighter and could go in the lighter classes, the 766 is a great farm tractor but with its weight you would be better off with the 966 or 1066, but either way the IH is the most respected puller at the pull, you know when the red hooks up is usually out the end.

Both tractors came from factory with more than 300 cubic inches.Neither came from factory with a turbo...Yes there are after market turbos available for either. No i do not believe a non turbo tractor can compete with a turbocharged one of the same basic components??

6500 #'s is close for the 666 and the 766 is definetly heaver with it's larger frame. I always thought the 666 was closer to 7000 #'s.

Anyway, I think some of the early 666's did come with an engine less than 300 ci somewere around 282 or 293. This engine was definately used in the 560,660, and 606 - predicessors to your tractor and should bolt right in. The 7x6 series used the same engines just turned up a little.

The D312 which was the standard at the end of production for the 666 was a much better engine as was the D310 used in some of the 666 and later on in the 686.

We have a real strong non turbo class in western PA. From time to time we run in open classes with turbo tractors. You might be suprised at what a non turbo can do. In most of these classes guys bolt on a turbo and figure they have it made. Most non turbo guys do a LOT of work. I have pulled against AC 180, 1066, Oliver 1850,4020 w/ M&W, Ford 9000, 560D turbo, etc.. Most wont even talk to you after you beat them!!! If I had my choice, I would not build another non turbo because the time and money that I have spent would make a decent Lim Pro or Super Farm.
