What is the best single-wire alternator to put on a G pulling tractor? Do you just run one wire from it straight to the battery? Its hard to depend on them old generators.

BWB,
I ran all over Shreveport/Bossier City looking for a GM 1-wire alternator for my 51 B with everyone at Pep Boys, Autozone, and Advanced Auto looking at me like I was some kind of nut. I asked the guy at NAPA and he had 2 of them on the shelf with a lifetime guarantee for about $60. Not only does it work great, the folks that put it together made it look real nice, too. I'm running a JD ammeter with it with good results.

Getting one that is built correctly, by a local shop you can go back to, is the best one. Just tell him what you're trying to do and that way they might work harder to make sure it is right the first time.

You can start with a AC DELCO for the larger one. Or if you're worried about weight find a Mitsubishi - I think it is a 2 wire alternator though. (around 6 pounds of savings.)

Yes I agree that it ruins the look of any John Deere, but the fact that I rebuild my generator two times a year is real aggravating. This winter there will be a Mitsubishi mounted on mine.

If you can't find one e-mail me and I'll sell you one.

I plan on installing aftermarket gauges also. Should I get a voltage gauge (8-18 volts) or a ammeter gauge that is like the original which shows how many amps of charge or discharge. Thanks

BWB you can use a Deere ammeter without any trouble. I use the white face gauge with a 12v system, alternator, MSD system without any trouble.

I also installed aftermarket gauges. Even going as far as to get all electrical. No leaky tubing for me.

I installed fuel level, water temp, Volt meter, and Oil pressure (make sure you get a low pressure gauge John Deere don't carry but 15 - 20 psi). AUTOMETER 2 1/16" fit in the original holes like a glove.

Does Autometer make a low pressure gauge that would work on a John Deere. I looked in my Jegs and Summit Racing catalogs, and all I saw was 0-100 psi gauges.

I believe they only have the 0-100psi,I checked every line they had..wish they had a 0-60psi,it would make for a better matching instru panel.I even thought about opening another ATM gage and changing the scale out,too much trouble and probably would destroy the gage in the process

BWB,

No. The 0 - 100 psi is all that Autometer shows with an electric sending unit. It does a fine job. Autometer even gives this nice little green cover for the bulb to turn your gauges green.

I did find I needed to turn the oil pressure up on my JD 630. The original JD gauge read right in the middle. I Installed the new Autometer gauge could not get needle to move. So I checked with a mechanical gauge and adjusted appropriately. The autometer gauge was correct.
