MSD is a good coil about $40 at your local hotrod shop. I think a coil will only produce as much voltage that is needed to jump the plug gap. Open your gap and up the voltage.

Personally, I went to JEGS and got 10.2 gauge spark plug wire and run a 60000 volt Flame Thrower coil from Ron Beaty. This did help the old M out. You can take it for what it's worth I don't care, but it is anouther option to think about.

YOUR JUST AS MONEY AHEAD TO GO WITH AN INEXPENSIVE COIL FROM ADVANCED AUTO OR WHOEVER SELLS THE ACCEL SUPER STOCK COILS CAUSE I AGREE WITH Gpower YOU CAN ONLY USE SO MUCH AND THE REST IS DUMPED.

GOOD LUCK.

we put a denny's 55,000 volt coil on one of my sons m and it gained one horsepower on the top end and three more horsepower with it lugged down. we did this while hooked to the dyno.

For what its worth. You could use a coil without the internal resistor and run it without a resistor as long as you don't mind replacing the points and not putting around a lot.

A hotter coil of 50000 volts is not going to help you at all. A spark plug wire can only take around 28000 volts, any more and it is just going to dump the extra voltage to the outer parts of the wire, and the plug will never get all the voltage anyhow. I would invest in a good 20000 coil and magnetic pickup and be done. Just some thoughts

You've got the right idea, Gpower. A coil delivers "x" amounts of volts only when in an "open wire" configuration. If the electrons jump a gap (spark plug, for instance), the air ionizes and causes this gap to look almost like a dead short. Dead short = very low voltage. And this doesn't change, regardless of how much initial voltage was available.

A better indication of a coils power is how many "joules" a coil will deliver. Joules are the actual amount of energy available. I *think* some coil manufacturers will give that figure on their products. If you can find this number, then the higher, the better, Regardless of the voltage the coil will deliver.

Electronic ignition will give you much more energy from your coil than, say, a high output coil coupled to regular breaker points. This would be a more worthwhile investment than just looking for a higher voltage coil.
