A four valve 53 series will make 25 HP per cylinder at 1800 rpm with N50 injectors, N series pistons & sleeves. Take the low compression "S" pistons & piddly dribbling "S" injectors and hurl them away. With the 10-1/2 turn/.192"dia wire cam follower springs & late valve springs 2950rpm fast idle/2800rpm loaded is safe. A non turbo 4-53 will make 155HP without a muffler and low restriction intake without even making serious smoke. Never ever grind the valves and seats on any diesel, purchase new.The receded valves drops compression/power and makes starting misorable.

All 1900's and 1950's had 4-53's.The first place to start is with larger injectors. There used to be a guy that posted on here that had extensive Detroit experience with souping them up.I have lost his email address.

Years ago there used to be a man(David Putnam?) at Palmyra,MO that pulled a turboed 1950 Oliver in the 12,000 lb SS class and he did fairly good with it.The old 4-53's can make some power.

Post your question on the Oliver board. There usually are a few people willing to help out. Are you allowed to add a turbo?

Take care

Any truck shop that has Detroit diesel service should be able to give you some help. There were millions of 71 series engines in heavy trucks and lots of tweaking has been done on them. 75 or 90 or 110mm injectors, advancing the timing, etc. aRt
