John deere 70d

when you first start the deisel engine when it is below 50 degrees, it seems like it misses on a cylinder, then when it gets warm or you put it to a load, then it will come out of it. what would be the cheapest way to get more power out of my 70d?

Rebuild the entire engine as it's getting tired. Use the head off a 720/730 as it has larger valves. The 720/730 also uses a 13mm injection pump and 6 hole injectors. The 720/730 pistons also have a better piston bowl shape too. Even stock she has enough HP to spin the tires in 1st gear in the 8000lb class. Concentrate on getting traction and weight balance first. No use spinning out at half track turning the wheels at 5mph when somebody else putts to track end doing only 1-1/2 mph and takes 1st place.

More fuel... you can get a lot of HP out of the pumps you have.. enough for the stock head.. (yes, look for the head G Taylor was talking about.. but bigger valves in the later head will/would be better too.) You need more rack travel.. the stock setting is about 13.. you can go a lot more than that.. it has to be done on the inside.. On the injector tips.. you need to know what pistons you have.. the crown on the tops are a little different. the stock 70D tips are 4 holes .010.. the 830 tips are 6 holes at .012 and the angles of the holes are the same. The 730 tips are 6 hole .010.. but the angle is a little narrower. (the bowl in the pistons is smaller.) I am running the 730 tips in my 70D now, with the old style pistons.. they have a bigger bowl.) When I over haul it, it will get the 730 pistons. On the tips.. if you do not get more fuel the bigger tips will not help.. I went from the 4 holes to the 6 holes and gained 0hp until I worked on the rack travel. JDGnut

WOW thanks for the info. I didn't know that since it has 15.5's on it if it would pull vary well. Do you guy's know whare I could find a set of six hole .012 injectors. About how much will I have to spend for a set of them? I have a rack off of an 730. I will need to put it on it. What about would the horse be up to then?

The "R" had four hole injector tips but the 70D,80 and 820 green dash shared the same injection pumps and five hole injector tips. A JD parts CD shows the running changes made and what mixes and matches from each tractor. The 70/720/and 730 used alot of different part numbers. As previously said, "a too nozzel without enough pump behind it just dribbles fuel". More fuel needs more air and the increased combustion pressure will just leak out if the bores/pistons are worn. Even with the tall tires and fast 1st gear the stock 70D should be ok in the 8000 lb class.

Do you think that if I just turned up the pumps that, that would help me vary much, or scould i get those six hole tips. I don't really have much cash right now to overhawl the motor. Ohh also do you guys think 9500lbs class would be asking alot out of her? Thanks for your time.

Opps.. I got my tractors mixed.. lol.. Yes. the R's had the 4 hole tips.. and the 70D had the five holes.. We are running the 6 hole .010 tips in both.. The parts book I have list the 830's has having a 6 hole .012 tips.. I'll get the number when I get home.. This is out of the John Deere Diesel Injection Book not the tractor parts book.
The expensive part is going to be getting more air.. the tips will cost you $65-75 each.. and the more fuel can be had at no cost.. usually. Your transfer pump should put up enough pressure.. so are running electric pumps, but they are not always needed.. (If the pump is bad or weak its cheaper to install the electric pump.) JDGnut
