JD engine woes

I have a 1964 JD 2010 gasoline tractor. It's been a good little tractor but lately it runs like crap. It doesn't smoke real bad but it keeps fouling spark plugs. The points and distributor have been replaced and I fear a major overhaul is looming. Any ideas on who in southern Indiana knows didily about JD gas engines?

Curt, I can't recommend a good mechanic, but I might be able to give you some insight into what the problem may be. First, are the plugs carbon-fouled, oil-fouled or fuel-fouled? A compression check might reveal exactly what the problem is. You might need nothing more than a carburetor rebuild if the plugs are fuel fouled, and possibly a head job if they are oil fouled. If the compression is low, squirt some oil in the cylinders and try it again. If it comes up substantially, you probably have worn rings and cylinders. If the compression stays nearly the same, the valves are likely the problem, and you could be getting oil in the cylinders past the guides. If you know of a local mechanic that is good with other kinds of engines, chances are that he will be able to help you out on your 2010. There are no principles that apply to 2010 gas engines that don't apply to other makes of gasoline engines.
