Can someone enlighten me as to how much total timing is realistic for a 2000 rpm 6cyl.I know there are a number of factors to take into consideration but as a general rule what would be ballpark.I find it hard to believe that when you send a distributor to be dialed in that you get it back with a calibration "specifically" curved for your setup. If your initial timing is 20 degrees plus the advance gives another 25-30 isn't that going to light it up a bit to early?

I'm not sure that "specifically" is the correct way to look at it but more "proportionally". For example, Deere would set their distributors at full advance @600rpms. If you are running 10% or 1100-1200rpms, you can have peak advance set for the highest rpm range and have your mid-range calibrated to retard with rpm. It is as simple as a few weights and springs to achieve the desired range.

I'd call Matt at Motec for more specific info.
