Expert help wanted: I have a 1948 JD B tractor S/N B236980 that has a good working rockshaft and hydraulics. I have enough 2 cylinders to work my farm and I want to lighten up this tractor for pulling. I looked in my part book, but I need some expert experienced help.

I want to purchase a flat back, but keep my PTO for testing the tractor on a dyno and some pulls that require dyno proof. Which flat back do I need? It seems that a B's use the same gasket, but the flat back cover changes from part # AB2519R to B2834R at Serial Number B201000. Is this when the PTO shaft size changed? The shape of the earlier flat back is what I desire if I can get my regular PTO shaft to work. It appears that the later flat back has more cast iron to support the new style seat. I will also be taking the battery box and new style seat off and putting on the old "hang-ass" style seat. It is lighter and looks better in antique pulls.

Which flat back should I buy and why?
