I'm interested in trying antique tractor pulling. I've been looking at Olivers (77's and 88's ), but was wondering whether a Massey Harris 44 or Senior would pull well. If anyone has an opinion on those or other models ( and I'm sure there must be plenty ), I'd really like to hear them. Thanks!

Ipull both, a 44 massey and an 88 ollie. massey has far more torque (5.5 " stroke) oliver had more hp. it's easier to buy performance parts for the oliver, but good parts can be found for both. good luck

Thanks for the advice, guys. At least, now I feel like I'm heading in the right direction. Hey Ted, you said that you would recommend the Oliver over the Massey. What's the advantage to pulling the Oliver? Thanks again. Dr.D

The Olivers are an easier tractor to get more hp out of. The Masseys have a tough head and manifold set up to get air flow from. The Olivers also have a faster gear ratio, not sure that if in your area you speeddometer or gear rules. I build Oliver motors and could help you out if you need anything. The best advise I can give is if you get the bug and like to win it can get exspensive to keep placing on the weekends. But it is a lot of fun and you'll met real good people.

I pull a Massey 44 in the 4500 and 5500 lb div 2 type class. Even 'stock' they do pretty well in this type of class. Biggest problem is that it is kind of heavy in the front in the 4500 at least at our track.

One big advantage to the Olivers is that there is a lot more off the shelf go-fast parts available for them. It all depends on how far you want to go.

We used Mh rears a lot in the early days of mod. pulling. From everything I've seen, the MH44's seem to hold their own. It's all a matter of setup when it gets right down to it. Give it a shot, you got nothing to lose and the world to gain. Stay hooked!

I pull both a MH 44 and an Ol 77. I have pulled the 44 since 1975 in 4500 thru 5500 lb. claases with succuss thoughout the years. I have pulled the 77 for the last 5 years in 3500 thru 5000 lb. with little succuss. The 44 seems to hook on almost all type of tracks while the 77 does better on soft tracks. When given the choice on which to take the 44 almost always is the tractor that gets loaded.

For what it's worth - I'd pull a 44 (4 cylinder) over a Senior, anyday. Had a 101 Super, now have a 44. The 101 actually had more pto dyno hp at rated speed than the 44 at rated speed, but no lugging power. Fell flat on its face everytime in it's stock configuration. The 44 does fairly well in 4500 and 5500 div 2, in the money about half the time, average class size is around 20.

There are a few good 101's, but it seems to take more money to get the lug out of the old flathead 6 than out of the 4 cylinder 44.

I agree that the 44 would be the best choice if your going Massey but I would recommend Oliver.
