New to John Deere, on the 730, which engine can you get the most out of, the gas or the diesel? Considering purchasing one. Don't want to make the wrong choice

I have done the 730 diesel thing. One thing I learned was, you must have deep pockets to make one pull up front with the 6cyl IH diesels and radical detroits if pulling the light classes(RPMS and Speed thing for the 8, 9K classes). The 730 diesel loves getting into the 10000# and above classes. I have seen one weighed for a 16000#. They pull. End of story.

I also did a 630 gas. Much cheaper, you can turn more RPM's when allowed with gas. Overall as much fun and can pull up to 10000#'s and still be competitive with the front runners. So i would say if you get the 730 light enough, with the cubic inches the gas has, it will be competitive also.

What is the famous dietician's saying? THINK LIGHT. LOL!

The two cylinders are best suited for reliably doing a lot of work in the field on a little fuel. Or pulling in stock to modestly souped classes at limited ground speeds. When it comes to making lots of peak HP per cubic inch requires large port/valve area per cubic inch and high rpm's. Low rpm torque/efficiency uses smaller, heated, high velocity ports per cubic inch.

Gas is considerably lighter than diesel, so if mainly for pulling, gas would be my choice. Power should be about the same.
