I am looking for .045 over John Deere cast iron kerosene pistons for my 49 G. It has standard pistons in it now. Need to have bored and would like a set of oversize. Either that, or douse someone know who in the Milwaukee Wisconsin area would sleeve it to standard.

Thanks for your time,

Will P

I know where there are some .045 aluminum pistons you can get for cheap. Your wrist pin is the same, and .045 rings from JD are the same. I personally don't understand why you would want cast iron, the aluminum higher compression will sure run a lot smoother and better. Oh, you will also go from 38 to around 50 hp.

Tell me about your 45 over pistons? how much? Can i really get to 50 HP with them? How much more for the rings and wrist pins? I am buliding this one to pull. so email on the pistons and any other helpful hints to make my G run better is apperciated.

Thanks
Phillip

Todd is right on the money when he says 50 hp.My 53 G had 55 hp at 450 pto rpm's and that was with just.090 over high compression pistons and a worn out set of valves and an uncut head.I just went to the machine shop today to check on my head and they cut a quarter inch plus off the surface. It is just touching the eyebrows on the intake valves.I would like to see 60 plus but we'll see.If you get on a good clay track you will wish you had the high compression aluminum pistons in it.Good luck and have fun.

The pistons belong to a friend, I can get a price if you want, rings can be purchased at Deere for a reasonable price. Shave your head .250, open it up a little, use a gas manifold and you will be close to 55 hp. Thats not a bunch, but is cheap and will make a good low gear puller in a 6000 - 6500 lb. class.

I believe Will is interested in actually farming with his "G", and wants to keep it as stock as possible for that purpose. The aluminum pistons will not allow the engine to run more smoothly. Due to their lighter weight, they will throw off the dynamic balance built into the crankshaft, clutch driver and flywheel, which will produce more vibration than the stock pistons. Obviously in a slow-running engine like a "G" it won't be a huge issue, but the fact remains that aluminum pistons affect the balance of the engine. I have .045 over cast pistons with new rings, but after hearing what used ones and NOS ones are going for, I decided to hang onto them, as I intend to build a totally stock "G" someday.

Well if he is farming with his G I had rather have 50 hp available than 38. Higher compression piston that I am speaking of are not "pulling only pistons" they were designed as a power increase. I bushog with my G - does very well. I also have a G with those flat tops, sounds twice as loud. Not trying to start any argument, but I have both and I don't think I am too deaf to tell that one sounds a heck of a lot better than the other one. I know those cast pistons especially .045 are high, so why not save some money, AND increase your power with the aluminums farming with it or not. It's your decision Will.

No argument here, Todd. I just happened to know that Will was looking for cast pistons for his "G", because we were in contact about the set I have. I was interested in selling them, but they are getting harder to find, and I decided to keep them for a future pure-stock "G" project. I hate that he's having trouble finding pistons, and that they seem to be so high-priced. I'm building the '48 "G" I have now with .125" over aluminum pistons, and I'm shooting for about 65 horsepower in it, so running the old ones was never an option for me. I hope Will finds a set of cast slugs, as I would be interested in how a stock "G" performs, especially on kerosene. I think there was a comment about him forgetting about a three-bottom plow. I don't think he'll have any trouble pulling three bottoms, as the "G" was rated as a three plow tractor. Most people forget that although gasoline will tolerate higher compression, kerosene has more BTUs per gallon, and will produce more power than gasoline at the low compression ratio of a stock "G". It should be an interesting project, and it's good to see someone restoring a tractor to actually use it.

Thanks, G-MAN. I just want to say, I have nothing against souping up a tractor. In-fact, If I find another cheap G, I will be beefing it up to pull. There is nothing greater than seeing an old two lunger give it all it has to the last breath.

Well, it is starting to look like I will be buying the NOS Deere pistons. That will set me back $500, but hey. I paid $1000 for the G. Get it running and I still would not be out of money. Keep in touch.

I don't know how old you are, but I imagine seeing things like that makes the older guys wish they'd have gone to Deere and stocked up on those kinds of parts when they were still readily available. A guy could have become rich selling NOS parts today. I guess the good part would be that they are still available - I can't imagine rebuilding a tractor that would require an extensive search for each and every little part that needed to be replaced. I don't have the patience for those kinds of deals. Good luck with the "G".

I am 32. And I do wish I could go back in time. My list, BWH-40, P, spoker D, GP crossover just to start the list. Yes, I am glad that most Deere dealers have the parts new. Wouldn't want to be restoring anything else.

Thanks,

Will P

I am going to run kerosene in it. Everything is there and working. But the bushing in the connecting rods cracked, spun and burned the wrist pins. I bought it dead. So this is what I have found out about the tractor since I bought it.

All we have out at the farm is 2 bottom plows right now. But I will be getting a 3 bottom by spring. It will be also belt power for a Case 22X36 thresher. My B has a little of a hard time running it. She too is a stock kerosene burner.

Thanks for your help guys,

Will P

Well I'm glad to see people interested in running tractors in original form with original fuel. Depending on your soil, if you leave it stock stock and run kero for fuel, you may want to forget the 3 plow idea. I have a good rod if you need it. Let me know.

I would go with the High compression Al pistons.. They are not that high compression.. they Raise the ratio to about 6.5-6.75:1.. maybe a little more if the stock head has been milled a few times. My Grandfather and my Dad rebuilt a in the late 50's-early 60's with these pistons and farmed with the tractor for a long time. We rebuilt a G with the AL flat top pistons, instead of the high compression pistons.. it is a great running engine/tractor.. but it just doesn't have the HP do the work.. much less pull.. It just looks good... (but that means it doesn't get out much.) Good luck

If you go with the High Compression pistons, you will get more good from the if you also switch to a gas manifold. I have a 46 GM with .125 over M and W pistons, Ported and Polished, A 38 G with .090 over and a few other Mods., 49 G with .045 over M and W's, and a 52 G with stock cast pistons and the only one with the orginal Power Manifold. They all run good, but the 52 is quite a bit short of the others. It will lug down as good or better than any tractor out there though.
