Need bigger starter for G Puller

I have a 51 G John Deere that I am building to pull. The factory starter isn't going to be strong enough. I've seen G pulling tractors with different starters that use a pushbutton or key switch. What kind of tractor are they off of? What kind of solenoid do I need to use a pushbutton-type starter switch? Thanks for the help.

Try some quality heavy guage cables with soldered connections and at least a 1000 CCA not 1000 CA battery. Connect the gound cable to the starter body not the battery box.

I use the Nip starters off the later model tractors with the gear reduction.. 8.1L, 7.6, 6.8 JD engines.. they are lighter than the others and clear the crankcase cover better.. but they don't have the nose cone over the flywheel you can see the starter gear.. Only problem I have had was with Crappy batteries... JDGnut

Brandon I put a Nippendenso on my puller, still have to open pedcocks. If you go looking for a starter ask for one that fits a 4020 same bolt pattern then get you a heavy duty solinoid. with the Nip I had to modify the crank cover,I was looking for the gear reduction couldn't find one.Gman

I sell the gear reduction starters everyone is using for $225 plus shipping. This is a new starter with no core charge. I've got these on 750 ci G's that turn it over quite nicely. The main problem being the first time she kicks back it will definetly break the aluminum nose cone. Some people have made a brace to help the problem.

I had the same problem with my A and G pullers. After checking with other JD pullers I got a starter from a diesel Bobcat. It's a gear-reduction starter that bolts right up to the G bracket. It has the solenoid on the starter, so you can use a key switch or push button. The Bobcat number should be C 6475. Cost about $300 new, hard to find a good used one around here. Hope this helps.

We also use the Bobcat starter on our 2 G pullers and have had great luck with them. The starter is a Delco Remy and we were able to buy it right from a GM dealership.

Hope this helps

those bobcat starters are the way to go. it and a 925ca battery still won't crank my g over without decompressing it but it's a whole lot better than the stock.

I'll have to have some type of solenoid for the switch to go to won't I. I've seen some with a solenoid similar to those on a truck fender next to the battery. Your power from the battery goes to one post, and then there is a cable that goes to the starter on another post. Your switch wire goes somewhere on it to activate the starter. What kind of solenoid is that? Wouldn't I still have to have one even though the starter has an electric solenoid instead of a foot pedal? Thanks for the reply.

I have the bobcat starter on my G that is mentioned above. You don't need another solenoid in order to use the starter. I have mine hooked up as follows: I have a heavy duty cut-off switch inline on the positive battery cable from the battery to the big post of the starter. From the disconnect switch, I ran a hot wire to a key switch. From the key switch, I ran a wire to a push button starter switch. From the starter switch, I ran a wire to the small post on the starter solenoid. I also ran the wire to my coil out of the key switch, so there is less chance of being forgetful and burning your points up.

I realize that there are many simpler ways to hook up these starters, but I wanted both safety and security. If anything should happen such as the starter hanging or any type of electrical short, I can turn off the disconnect switch and there is no electricity going to the starter or the coil. The key switch keeps anyone from starting the tractor when I don't want them to, and it also keeps them from running the battery down by trying to start the tractor without power to the coil.

E-mail me if you have any questions

Use a chain. It's a lot cheaper. Won't break.

Chain isn't neccessarily the best option either. I built a 70 w/ 9.75" stroke and about 8:1 compression and found that the 575 CA battery was not up to the task, being short of time we decided to give it a pull. Well I was surprised to find that without any extra weight on it the tires skidded on dry pavement...in high gear! A 1000 CA battery works much better :). I still have the stock starter, but with more compression I don't know if it would turn it over, even with a bigger battery, it's sort of marginal even now. It does alright if you set the throttle on idle and apply it a little as she starts attempting to fire.
