Looking for some feed back on the Chevy Duramax.
Do you like it?
Is it worth it?
Do you like the Allison Trans. ?
What kind of mileage?
Or do you like the Vortec 6000 V8?
Any information would be great!
Thanks.

Thanks for all the info.
The Studebacker has got me to alot of pulls,
But I am tired of getting 6 to 10 miles a gallon.
Yes, I've heard the new Ford is really an animal.
I've been told Chevy is having trouble with the water pumps in the 6.0, and trouble with the injectors on the diesel. I drove a new Hemi Dodge, it had very good power! I have two good friends, one has a new Dodge, and another the Ford power stroke. Both love their diesels. The only thing a don't like about a diesel is one- when you pull in a little town, you can't find fuel, and second- problems in the winter. The Chevy was $800.00 for the 8.1 motor, and $5000.00 for the diesel, and $2400.00 for the tran. I can buy a $41,000.00 truck for $33,000.00 Didn't think that was to bad. It's a diesel.
Again - thanks for the info.

Hey Bigmotors are you getting ready to trade off your Studebaker? A new Duramax would be a good way to go.

In August, we purchased a 2002 GMC HD for our farming operation. Aside from light work around the farm, we utilize this truck for pulling our 32 foot tandem axle gooseneck trailer. Prior to purchasing the GMC, all of the pickups we used in our operation were gas powered Fords except for one diesel powered Dodge. Unfortuneately due to some pump and turbo problems, we returned back to the gas powered Fords. In regards to the question, I believe the question yu need to ask yourself is how muck time are you pulling a trailer and how much weight are you pulling? Approximately six months out of the year we pull 15,000 to 22,000 pounds excluding the weight of the truck to and from tractor pulls. Because we are not utilizing the truck on a daily basis for pulling, and the fact that we tend to trade about every five years, we decided to go with the 8.1 liter with the Allison Automatic. All that I can say, is if you need more power then this motor provides, get yourself a semi tractor. Overall the mileage for everday driving with 4.10 gears is 10 1/2 to 12 1/2 miles per gallon. Loaded expect around 6 to 8 depending on how fast you want to drive. My intention was not to praise one partiular brand of truck over another, but just to provide you with different perspective. The reason I say this is the fact that our second vehicle is a Ford Explorer, and our four-wheel drive tractor is powered by a Cummins.

I too have a 2002 HD with the vortec 8100 and allison tranny. I pull a 400 and a M to some pulls fairly close to home. not once have i seen a gasser running 65 mph and go to pass a semi and be doing 80 by the time you get to the tractor. now if you ask me thats some serious ponies from a gasser. just my experience

A powerpuke pplleeaassee. What about the fuel effeciency? Is it because it comperable to a gasser?

Look at the rpm ratings. A Ford can not maintain the necessary rpms to operate with a cummins without dropping a gear.

Give me a ford truck equipped with the cummins engine and the gm seats now were talking.

Unfortunately, Dodge doesn't have their new auto tranny out yet. However, when hooked with the 5 or 6 speed the Cummins is the best. Why do tractors have inline 6 cylinder engines? Because they have the best torque and efficiency and longevity. Simply, the inline 6 is a better engine. The new Cummins engine is even better, now they are quiet and even more powerful. If you really need the power, go with the HO Cummins and 6 speed tranny.

I've been reading up on the Cummins.. and they probably are not going to be out this (year 03 models) with the new 5 sp auto.. but they are in Jan.. suppose to offer an upgraded 4sp auto with the new HO (305hp).. so we will see.. I'd have to go with the 6sp myself... but I sure love my 300+hp 01.5 5sp..... but going to have to start working on the clutch before more HP...

I am the asst.parts mgr. at a GM dealer. I also own a 2001 Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0 and 4L80 auto trans. Its four wheel drive with a 4.10 gear.
I tow my tractors with it on a 22ft. trailer, and haven't had any problems. Granted I am not towing every weekend, and this truck is my daily transportation. If you are planning to tow heavy loads all the time the Duramax is the only way to go. I have seen a couple early Duramaxs with coolant leaks, but that was very early in production. The bootom line is how do you plan to use the truck? For playing around once in a while, going to tractor shows I couldn't see spending the extra 6500.00 for the Duramax and Alison trans. But if you need a great work truck I would spend the money and get the diesel.

We have a 2001 duramax 3500 crew cab 4x2 we use to pull our 38' gooseneck we haul hay and straw with it. We have had 3 blown head gaskets. and 1 bad turbo. Other than that the duramax is ok other than it lacks power in the hills compared to my old cummins. just my 2 cents

We have a 99 2500 with the 6.0L...I was towing our 24ft tri-axle trailer with a JD B and a Farmall 706 on it.. I was towing through some hilly terain and got 7-8 mpg...I got to my friends house and we hooked his 2002 2500HD wih the duramax and allison and towed the trailer back with a heiver load then the 2 tractors that were previosly on the trailer and got about 16mpg and the duramax climed the same hills as the 6.0L with alot more speed and ease. And keep in mind the both the 6.0L and the duramax are 300hp but just different tourques...needless to say a duramax is now on the way to replace the 6.0L.....

Few people around here have them and they really scream. Transmission gets an A+ too. They've had pretty good luck with them. Ford has started producing their new diesel, has more power than the duramax. It's a 6.0 Powerstroke. They've got a 5-speed automatic too that's supposed to be as good as the Allison.

The family business is commercial construction and I guess you could say we have used all brands/types of trucks. An unbiased opinion is that all brands and types of trucks have there goods and bads. I personally have parked in my driveway for a period of time 2 dodge cummins and 2 gmc duramax diesels in the last 4 years. I currently am driving an 02 gmc with the duramax. I think GM has a better diesel/auto combination over the cummins/automatic. I'd like to drive a duramax with a 5 or 6 speed to compare the diesel/manual combo. I have almost 13K miles with an average of 18mpg. I have had a couple tanks of 20.+ but that is driving like my dad and limiting the rpms to below 2000 rpms. With the quad cab GM's you are limited to a 24 gallon fuel tank or around 400 miles between tanks. Is it worth the extra $5000 for any diesel engine? How much do you drive? What is the price difference between gas-diesel? Do you want the extra fluid capacity and maintenance? My brother drove a 2000 GM with the 6000 series vortex for only 6 months before going back to the diesel. Go figure

If you park your Diesel in a garage attached to your house it would be wise to check with your wife as to weather she like the oil smell. Mine said no.
